The shuttle bus service recovered this summer the number of users in 2019, and broke records in August and September. Almost 50,000 users have taken the bus from 15th June to 30th September, linking the car park of the quarry with the Mijas historic centre. The Councillor for Transport and Mobility of Mijas Town Council, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE), has emphasised that " in August and September, this service has experienced a significant increase compared to the pre-pandemic phase. June and July have been a 'little' below, but we want to highlight the figures for August and September".
There were 30,000 people on the bus during August and September, half that number, 15,000, especially on two dates: the Virgen de la Peña procession and the Saturday of the Fair, when the quarry held almost 600 vehicles and 1,100 people made use of this free service, provided by Mijas Town Hall with a double objective: "to make up for the lack of parking in the town and prevent road traffic in the historic centre", Cruz points out. Moreover, it does not only operate during the summer. The shuttle bus was also in operation at Easter this year. It will remain on certain days as, according to the Mayor, "the growing numbers of visitors to the town for important events such as the procession, the fair, music, cultural or theatre festivals will ensure this service remains. At least occasionally, for these events gather more tourists, and visitors are coming to these types of activities. Therefore, any car park extension could not cope with this influx at specific times".
The bus will run again on October 12th
The bus will start again on 12th October, to coincide with the Virgen del Pilar festivity and the Guardia Civil's events programme taking place that day in the town. The service will run from 9 am to 6 pm.
The donkey taxi service, horse-drawn carriages, the bus stop, and the taxi rank will be moved for this celebration. "The taxi rank will be placed in the Avenida de México, and the bus stop will be moved to the back of Mijas Town Hall, to the area known as Olivar Don Pablo", concluded the Councillor.
