The objective was to raise funds and detect possible diabetics as they carried out free blood glucose tests.

The diabetes group of the Lions Club of La Cala de Mijas organised a charity autumn market on Saturday, 24th, to raise funds and provide information about this disease. " It affects more and more people every day, although many are unaware that they suffer from it", explained Anne Bowles, who founded the group in 2003.

It is "an event to raise funds and continue with its charitable activity through its volunteers that is helping all the people who have this disease, diabetes, to cope with it in their daily lives", explained the Foreigners' Councillor, Arancha López (Cs). She did not hesitate to give her support to the group. She also highlighted the informative action they are carrying out "to make everyone aware that it is essential to have good healthy lifestyle habits so that we can prevent this disease".

Blood glucose test

The market was on the Bar Tuta terrace in La Cala. It had a range of stalls selling crafts, food and other items to raise funds. In addition, "a nurse" tested the "blood glucose levels" of those who came to the market to detect possible diabetes cases," added Bowles. She insisted on the importance of nutrition and exercise. In this sense, she pointed out that they are already working on their traditional popular walk in which the Town Council usually collaborates, 'Muévete contra la diabetes' on the 13th of November this year . The walk started from Torreón Square in La Cala to walk along the coastal path last year. This group is already looking for sponsors and encouraging residents to get involved on that day, especially young people, "to accompany the older participants", explained Bowles.
