The Charity Tables organised by the Department of Foreigners in La Cala de Mijas have been popular during July and August afternoons and evenings. Now they are back in September on their usual timetable, from 11:00 to 14:00 hours. Many people have come to see the work of the associations and buy some items. "We have a great atmosphere with many associations attending. Many people collaborate with these associations that do a fabulous job in the Mijas municipality helping people in need and animals too", commented the Councillor for the Foreigners Department, Arancha López (Cs), during her visit to this street market last Saturday.
The Mijas Women in Equality Association was part of the charity tables on this occasion. "We give talks to raise awareness so that people realise the serious problem we have regarding women. This is what we do; we give talks in schools, and sometimes we hold events to raise money", says the Mijas Women in Equality Association secretary, María José Jaime.
Ace Shin, the animal protection association that has been working in La Cala for 23 years, also took part in the so-called charity market. Like most of them, they need everyone's collaboration, "at the moment, we have more than 350 dogs and 150 cats in our shelter, and we don't receive any money from the Town Hall or the Junta de Andalucía. Now we are waiting for donations from charity and from people who want to help us", explained the shelter volunteer, Denise Lansdale.
The Foreigners' Department is inviting any association in need of help to contact them and take part in these charity tables, constantly varying their activities and adding attractions such as live music. Those interested can contact the department at frd@mijas.es.
