What was once the emblematic Hotel Byblos in Mijas has reopened its doors today, after more than a decade of its closure. Renamed 'La Zambra' and with 197 rooms, this five-star hotel places the municipality at the forefront of luxury destinations in southern Europe in its commitment to quality tourism. The opening was attended by the Mayor of the town, Josele González, accompanied by the First Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín, and other government team members.
"We have worked closely with the property to make this opening a reality. What was an icon and international benchmark of the hospitality industry and a hallmark of quality tourism on the Costa del Sol reopens its doors, creating more than 200 jobs, thanks to the agreement signed between the hotel and the local government. "At least 50 per cent of the staff will be from Mijas", said the Town Mayor. He added, " there is no doubt this opening is a boost for our economy, not only because of the jobs created but also because of the economic impact that will generate the arrival of more tourists to the area.
Martín pointed, " the opening of this luxury accommodation is an undeniable attraction for the appeal of visitors with high net worth who are looking for comfort in an incomparable setting". "The hotel is in the heart of two golf courses with an environment full of: leisure, gastronomy, sun and beach, nature and sport, which places it as a reference and ally to break the seasonality which results in local economic stability and the maintenance of jobs during the low season," said the First Deputy Mayor.
Facilities
The project has completely renovated the facilities located on a 50,000 square metre plot of land with 27,000 square metres of constructed area and has counted on the Spanish team specialised in project management and execution of CBRE Hotels as Project Managers. Once completed, the hotel offers guests and local residents a social offering in a relaxed and luxurious environment. The architecture and interior design firm Esteva has been redesigning the facilities. The hotel offers a wide range of services, a varied gastronomic offer, a wellness centre and spa, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, family facilities such as a children's club, and exceptional conference venues for private events and business meetings. The complex retains its stunning views of the Sierra de Mijas and the two 18-hole Mijas Golf courses, designed by Robert Trent Jones.
The former Hotel Byblos Andaluz on the Costa del Sol has been an emblematic establishment in Mijas for decades that its two French siblings, Byblos St.Tropez and Byblos Courchevel, have represented European prestige and glamour. Personalities of the international political, artistic, and business scene have passed through this high-level accommodation. Thus, we can highlight the former Princess of Wales, Lady Di, Julio Iglesias, Rolling Stone, Antonio Banderas, the Saudi Royal Family, government presidents, ministers, and other personalities. It is worth noting that the Hotel Byblos was the first 5GL that tourists found on their arrival at Malaga airport, as the rest were already in Marbella and other more distant locations. The hotel, set on a small hill between two 18-hole golf courses in the Mijas Golf urbanisation, was known for its peace, tranquillity, and guests’ privacy.
