World Alzheimer's Day is held on the 21st of September. A date marked on the calendar to raise public awareness of this disease. It is now being described as the disease of the 21st century. Under the slogan 'InvestigAcción. On the road to dementia', the Mijas Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's patients (AFA) took to the streets to increase knowledge of the disease.

The central theme of this year's slogan is the fight for research, as the main aim is to tackle this disease which affects more than 1.2 million people in our country. After developing different activities in recent weeks and delivering some awards to establishments in the municipality, the Mijeña association set up collection tables.

To show their support for this group, the Mijas Mayor, Josele González (PSOE), and the Health Councillor, Candela León (Cs), visited the table in the Mijas Pueblo House Museum. According to the Councillor, "it is essential that on dates like today, we raise our voices, above all, for research, to continue supporting it, and to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease. Public institutions and citizens alike should support each one as far as they can". González highlighted the work done in towns, like ours, by "collectives that provide essential and selfless support". León pointed out "Mijas Town Hall must continue collaborating with this sort of events and help associations, which in this case is AFA Mijas". He also stressed, "they do excellent work for the patients, and let us remember that, besides, a large percentage of the population also suffer, indirectly, from this difficult disease". It ended with an open day at the centre, at 18:00 hours, where the artist Sergio Belmonte performed.

AFA Mijas

Every little bit helps. The AFA Mijas centre, which has 25 places, has become too small, especially after the pandemic. "We need more space, as all the places in our centre are covered, and we have a waiting list. The pandemic years have been hard and have seriously affected this group. Many people had not developed the disease before, and after the pandemic, they did," said the director and psychologist of the day centre, Mari Carmen López. Likewise, she wanted to thank "all volunteers and the Mijitas Women's Association that has also joined our collection tables". As reported in recent days by the Spanish Confederation of Alzheimer's, for 2022, the group focuses on research in various fields, such as biomedical perspective or social or socio-health research. The population must collaborate with this cause throughout the year.
