The Spanish Suicide Monitoring Centre estimates that there are 11 suicides a day. It was brought to the table on the 10th of September, World Suicide Prevention Day. The Mijas Town Hall, through the Social Services Department, continues to join forces thanks to the Local Suicide Prevention Programme.
"This province's pioneering programme seeks to detect signs before a suicide occurs through coordination between the different social agents", says the Councillor for Social Services, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE). He underlined that "through this programme, professionals from Social Services, Health, Local Police or groups that work closely with this problem such as Afesol or Faisem have been trained".
Coordination in these cases is fundamental, which is why the Local Suicide Prevention Programme has created a technical working group and a community network with different social agents who work with a protocol action. " We must highlight Israel Codina's involvement, Mental Health Area Fuengirola and Mijas' Director, in the community planning network", adds Zapico. He stresses that this network aims to intervene in a transversal way in cases of mental health and especially in suicidal behaviour.
Not surprisingly, the World Health Organisation estimates that there are around 20 attempts for every suicide. A figure supporting the campaigns, such as the one launched by the Social Services Department of Mijas Town Council last year under the title 'Life is a Solution', focuses on collective help.
Finally, it is worth remembering that people who need it have the telephone number of hope, 952 26 15 00, an anonymous and specialised service available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year ,and the recent 024 lines for attention to suicidal behaviour.
