The Patio de las Fuentes of the Town Hall hosts this photographic collection until 9th September

Mijas Communication inaugurated the photographic exhibition of the patron saint's procession on Friday, 19th August. The big Mijas' celebration's eve, when the Virgen de la Peña is out on procesion, will be 8th September. In collaboration with the Mijas Town Hall and the Virgen de la Peña Parish Brotherhood, the exhibition was attended by a number of local residents on the inauguration day. The Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE) was one of them: "I am very pleased to open this exhibition that will be in the Patio de las Fuentes of the Mijas Town Hall to remind us of the importance of the biggest week of our municipality. With this exhibition, many Mijeños will have good memories. For this reason, the work carried out by Mijas Communication makes even more sense," said the municipal Mayor.

  • The exhibition will be open until 9th September.

Besides, the exhibition is made up of 30 pictures of the procession of Mijas' patron saint in recent years, and will be open to the public until 9th September. It is "a work that Mijas Communication has done with great affection, and reflects the synergy between the media and the traditions of our municipality, especially to value the Virgen de la Peña", said the Mijas Communication CEO, José Carlos Martín (Cs). Adding, "all I can say are words of appreciation and gratitude for this local media's initiative". For his part, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE), also the media's CEO, added, "I want to highlight, in addition to the magnificent informative and entertaining work that we do at Mijas Comunicación, also the informative work and the maintenance of traditions. In short, social work defines our media and makes us different from many others".

Successful Opening Ceremony

The Mijas Mayor, communication managing directors, part of the municipal corporation, the Inmaculada Concepción's parish priest Francisco Villasclaras, and dozens of neighbours attended the event. "I believe everything done to promote the devotion to the Virgen de la Peña is not enough," said the parish priest. "I would like the exhibition to be more than just a glimpse, but for us to see the work and dedication of hidden, anonymous people in all these photographs", Villasclaras continued.

  • The collection consists of 30 pictures of the Mijas patron saint’s procesion over the last few years.

Brotherhood members, as it could not be otherwise, were also present at the inauguration. "I thank Mijas Communication as my grandmother handicapped, for many years, could see the Virgin's procession on Mijas 3.40 TV. It is a laudable and priceless work. Many neighbours can not leave their homes for whatever reason, but they can see the patron saint on television thanks to you", said one of the members, José Ignacio Ruiz.

  • Mijas visitors can look around among the almost 400 photographs of the main exhibition.

During the opening ceremony, Lola García, brotherhood member, read some verses from a poem in honour of the patron saint. García also emphasised that "I have relived what was happening here 17 years ago; that Friday, 19th August 2005, when for the first time an exhibition was inaugurated with fair souvenirs that recalled both the Mijas life in 60 fairs, and the historical events that took place during that period".

The opinion of the neighbours

According to the neighbours present, the exhibition brings to light moments from the past and reminds us of people who, sadly, are no longer with us. It is a pleasant surprise indeed; I thought it was going to be a photographic exhibition of the Virgen de la Peña, but the truth is that we surprised when we saw the photographic tour of all of us who can be identified in the processions or in the patron saint’s transfers", said Fernando Torres. Also, the neighbour 'Corro Alarcón' attended the inauguration of this exhibition. "There are some good photos, and it is moving me as there are many people who unfortunately are no longer alive, but it is also a way of remembering them".

  • The exhibition opened last Friday, 19th August.

The town's Mayor also wanted to "invite the Mijas residents to come to the Mijas Town Hall, to browse through the almost 400 photographs distributed in this Patio de las Fuentes. There is one thing that all these photographs have in common: they all show people smiling, and happy. I think that after two difficult years, is what we need most; to see our neighbours and friends smiling, and feeling happy".
