The music line-up for the Mijas Fair 2022 was presented last Thursday with just over a week to go before we dress up to party again. The Mayor of the town, Josele González (PSOE), and the Councillor for Fiestas, Tamara Vera (PSOE), presented the concerts for this fair which will take place from the 6th to the 11th of September.
In addition to the main concerts, we will enjoy other groups such as ‘El Callejón’ and ‘LongPlay’ at the daytime fair, on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Vera encouraged locals and tourists to join in the festivities. “If I have to choose an emblematic moment of the Mijas Fair, without doubt, I choose the daytime fair, as it is truly a family fair, so I invite all the neighbours and all the people who visit us to come to our fair, and enjoy the good atmosphere”.The artists line-up for the daytime fair is completed by: ‘A Compás’ on 7th September; ‘Alboreá’ on the 8th; ‘Rompeolas’ on 9th and 11th September; and ‘Los Barrieros del Sur’ on the 10th.
The festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Peña are drawing ever closer. There are many events that will pay homage to the perpetual mayoress of the people of Mijas. Today, Friday 19th August, an exhibition of photographs of the procession of the Virgin from the 1920s to 2019 will be inaugurated. Mijas Communication is organising this exhibition in which the Town Hall and the Virgen de la Peña Parish Brotherhood have also collaborated. It will open at 7 pm in the Town Hall’s Patio de las Fuentes.
Last Thursday, 18th, the Mijas Communication CEOs, José Carlos Martín (Cs) and Nicolás Cruz (PSOE), with one of the brotherhood’s members, José Ignacio Ruiz and the Director of the local media, Laura Delgado, were at the presentation of the exhibition. “It is a collection of snapshots of the Virgin’s procession that I think is really interesting and will surprise many people. The pictures will be on display until 9th September at the Town Hall until the day after our patron saint’s day celebration”, said Martín. Cruz emphasised that Mijas Communication “fulfils a fundamental objective that is the social role of bringing together all the Mijas social backgrounds. It makes sense because behind all this are the neighbours. We understand that this is an activity of the highest importance in which we also have to participate and try to bring closer to many people who do not have access to these images on a daily basis”.
The presentation of this exhibition was attended by the parish priest of the ‘Inmaculada Concepción’, Francisco Villasclaras. He assured that tradition and faith must persist in Mijas’ history along with our patron saint’s image. “It is about bringing out what others lived in other times, like our parents or grandparents, and bringing them out to remind us that we have obligations, that not all are rights, and that united we can do more than apart, that is the root, the tradition,” said the parish priest.
Poetry Afternoon
After two consecutive years without being held due to the pandemic, one of the special events in the Mijas calendar is back: the Poetry Afternoon in honour of the Virgen de la Peña, which this year celebrates its eleventh edition.
Mijas Pueblo is getting ready to experience one of its most important cultural events, as part of the celebrations in honour of ‘Nuestra Señora la Virgen de la Peña’. Last held in 2019, in 2022, it will be 11 years in a special anniversary thanks to the reunion of the poets with their patron saint. The event will take place on Sunday 21st August.
