“Very good”. It was the hotel occupancy rate in Mijas during July, according to hotel managers consulted by this newspaper. The First Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs), announced that Mijas exceeded its historic hotel occupancy record this week. “The data provided to us by Aehcos reflects that July reached 89.95 per cent so, compared to the same period in 2019 where the figures stood at 85 per cent, we increased and surpassed before the pandemic numbers which, in turn, were already the best in the town,” said Martín.

“Frankly, we can make a good balance of July. It is the first July after two years without restrictions and safety distance. The truth is that being able to set up all our facilities at 100 per cent has been important for us,” said the Director of the Vik Gran Hotel Costa del Sol in La Cala de Mijas, Manuel Camacho. He specified that the occupancy rate of his hotel last month was 92 per cent.

The Director of the Hotel TRH Mijas, Félix Reyes, was also optimistic about the figures recorded in July, even though summer is not its peak season. “We had an 86% occupancy rate in July. The balance is quite good for the forecast we had. Above all, we had British and Dutch tourists, when the national tourist had always stood out in July”.

Good forecasts

According to Aehcos, the forecast for August is 65.46 per cent. In 2021, the initial estimates for the eighth month of the year were 51.2 per cent, the final figure being 77.2 per cent, which is why the Town Hall expects the inertia of growth to continue. “Since the virus broke out in our society, travellers are more cautious when booking, and many wait until the last minute to do it. We have worked tirelessly to recover our tourism industry, so important in the Mijas economy. This kind of data we offer now encourages us and reinforces us to continue on our roadmap always with caution and without lowering our guard,” said Martin.

The growth of four percentage points of hotel occupancy in Mijas is “encouraging” news, added the Mayor. He recalled that it continues to organize, in turn, events to attract visitors, apart from promotional campaigns for the town’s attractions, including initiatives such as the Latin Night or the Celtic Night.

Concerning the Mijas hotel plant, it is worth mentioning that the long-awaited former Byblos Andalusian Hotel is about to open, offering employment to more than 200 people.
