Housed in a building dating back to 1776, the boutique hotel Opuntia will open its doors in the coming weeks. It is a small complex that blends luxury with tranquillity and has been completely renovated and refurbished. "It is a family project that has been done taking care of every detail. Also, something that is so important for us in Mijas Pueblo: maintaining the façade, the layout, and even the internal orientation and distribution of the spaces within this hotel, reminiscent of the old houses of the village," said the Mayor of the town, Josele González (PSOE).

Together with the Mayor, the First Deputy Mayor, José Carlos Martín (Cs), the Town Planning Councillor, Andrés Ruiz (Cs), and Councillor Laura Moreno (PSOE), also visited this morning the new hotel located in the Plaza de la Constitución. "We are delighted to be able to have such a wonderful space like this in Mijas," said Ruiz, who also wanted to see the facilities of the complex, adding that "there has been hard work before seeing this project become a reality in the town centre with an investment of almost 1,200,000 euros. I think the town has gained a tourist and cultural space".

Increase in the tourist offer

The creation of this new hotel space in the historic centre of the town will, according to the government team, mean an increase in the offer of tourist services in the municipality. "I believe that it will be an additional offer that will be very good for us from a tourist point of view. I am convinced that this new hotel will delight the tourists who come to visit us and that they will be enjoying a complete experience of the Mijas Pueblo environment," said González.

A hotel with history

More than two centuries ago, the hotel was an old Andalusian folk-style house. In the process of renovating the building, which has lasted almost three years, the main original structural elements of the building, such as its front, have been respected. In addition, the original structure of the house has been maintained, a structure that revolves around the two interior courtyards where all the rooms open onto them with large windows. " It is what we have devoted the last 11 years of our lives to", explained one of the owners of the complex, Juan Luis Millán, "first to acquire the part of the property that was not ours, then to obtain the building permit, to renovate the old house, and finally to start up the three economic activities that are going to be developed", he added. "The idea", continued his sister and also owner, Virginia Millán, "is to combine three projects in one: the hotel, the restaurant, and the shop, to recall the past of the house where different economic activities had taken place. With this in mind, we have recovered the idea of connecting the past with the present".

From the very first moment, it was clear to those in charge that it would be a complex built by locals. The hotel's engineer, Francisco Vera, from La Cala, has participated in the project together with his sister, the architect Esther Vera. And the company 'Construcciones Lavado y Mota' from Mijas has been in charge of making it a reality. "For me and for my company, it has been a pleasure to carry out this project. In fact, in the past, this was a small shop that everyone knew as Millán's shop. As soon as I was presented with the project I said yes, and for me, it was a challenge," said Francisco Mota, manager of 'Construcciones Lavado y Mota'.
 

Other services

In addition to the Opuntia hotel the complex has the 'Viento Sur' restaurant-cafeteria. Its name comes from a genus of plants of the cactus family, the prickly pear. It opened offering local gastronomic products and dishes, and the 'Mediterránea' shop, open since 1997, where original art works can be purchased, among other handicrafts.
