According to the Government team, the land owner will have to undertake various actions that will lead to a traffic reorganisation improvement

The Plenary has approved the change of classification from residential to commercial, a plot located on Avenida de Los Lirios that has been used as a public car park in recent years. Green light has been given for its initial approval after obtaining the votes in favour of the governing team. "The project purpose is to change the classification of the plot. Now, it is of a block, and it is going to be converted into a commercial plot, with the particularity that it has an external load. It contemplates the execution of a roundabout and a 'bypass' lane in the area of the Avenida de Mijas. Also, with the adaptation of the standard section in Avenida de Los Lirios and the change of direction in Santa Laura Street", stated the Town Planning Councillor, Andrés Ruiz (Cs). He also assured these actions to be undertaken by the land owner will improve the traffic flow in the area.

In a later press statement, the Town Planning Councillor highlighted the value of the commercial boost in this area. "This piece of land complements the commercial strip made up of 'El Corte Inglés', Ford and Carrefour. The development of a new supermarket will generate new jobs", explained the Councillor.

Motion to debate

The PP has questioned the general interest of this decision which, in addition, it points out, could lead to a reduction in the number of parking spaces in the area. "We believe there will be much more traffic, and  the traffic problem will be increased. If this is carried out, apart from making this small roundabout at the intersection, other measures would have to be taken", replied Bravo. He added, "I am afraid, no other measures can be taken, as there is no room to make bigger roundabouts, nor is there room to make more traffic lanes. The only possible solution is to prohibit parking".

In his response to Bravo, Ruiz pointed out that the traffic studies carried out by the Town Hall and by 'Carreteras' support this modification: "With the elimination of the residential area, and the reorganisation of traffic with the external charges that we have applied to this modification, this change responds to the general interest. In addition to the change of classification, there is going to be a reorganisation of the whole area, including the Ford roundabout. Demarcation of Roads required us to make a traffic study, and this has been carried out".

He also pointed out that "in Mijas, we carry out coherent urban planning and this initiative responds to this, as the elimination of residences also means an environmental improvement as these homes would suffer noise pollution, as a result of the motorway proximity".

On this point, the government team voted in favour; the PP and the non-attached Councillor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, opposed, while the non-attached Councillors Esperanza Jiménez and Carlos Rivero abstained.
