The new police officers have taken up their posts in the Mijas Town Hall Plenary Hall

Last Wednesday 22nd was a special day for the four new officers who joined the Mijas Local Police. After years of preparation and months of being part of it, today, they took office. They did so in the Plenary Hall of the Town Hall. They were accompanied by family, colleagues, and friends.

This step is the reward for hours of work and effort. "I started in 2008, and they stopped making vacancies because of the crisis. Then, I put aside my studies, and started working, and in 2016, when I became pregnant, I went back to my studies until last year. I waited for five years. It was hard for me, but it was an experience and the best thing that could have happened to me", said one of the new Local Police officers. Her colleague affirmed that "a dream has come true, it is our objective, I feel  lucky to have fulfilled this dream. It has been hard sometimes. There was a lot of effort, sacrifice, and, in the end, like everything in life, all  has its reward. I feel lucky as this is my vocation”.

Youth and enthusiasm
The Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), the Councillor for Human Resources, Laura Moreno (PSOE), and the Chief Intendant of the Local Police of Mijas, Juan Manuel Rosas, presided over the ceremony, emphasised that these new additions renew the staff with "youth and enthusiasm". "We are adding four new officers to our local police force. The limitations granted by the 2012 Stability Law do not allow the city councils to make all the hires we need and would like", said the Mayor. "They add to a body of local police who play an essential role in the Mijas municipality, the third-largest city in the province of Malaga with 149 kilometres of extension and 91,000 inhabitants. Mijas also has a large floating population which makes the security challenge complicated to address", said the Mayor, Josele González (PSOE). "Thanks to the commanders, thanks to each of the police officers, and the agents, we continue to work on security matters 24 hours a day, in collaboration with the rest of the state security forces," added the Councillor.

For his part, the chief intendant of the Mijas Local Police, Juan Manuel Rosas, acknowledged that the police force is also satisfied with the work being carried out by the new officers since they joined. Rosas added, "the Local Police include in their functions to be rule correctors of infractions. Of course, a part of coexistence, solidarity, the educational community, and dealing with mental health issues. Also, conflictive minors, mediation,  unemployment, accompanying school children, or even helping the elderly in their homes. It is a beautiful and rewarding job”.

Improvements
At present, the local police force has 150 members. During this event, the Mayor recalled that a few weeks ago, "we introduced new uniforms for our local police made from 100% recycled material, and new safety elements such as thermal torches or footwear of up to six different types depending on the service they provide". He also said he would continue to provide tools and elements for the officers to carry out their daily work safely, and in the best conditions.

"Steps to increase the safety of Mijas families is the most important thing. We know that security is one of the main concerns of the residents of any municipality in Spain. Mijas is no exception, and the government team is also concerned about this", concluded González.
