Mijas is all set to celebrate its first LGTBIQ+ Pride Party on the 28th of June. Today was announced by the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the Councillor for Equality and Diversity, Natalia Martínez (PSOE), at the presentation of a programme that comes to consolidate its slogan 'Live, feel and love free'.

"Our municipality is part of the Proud Municipalities Network. We not only show our flag but different spaces and corners dedicated to diversity and sexual freedom. We also go a step further on this day, with the first Pride festival celebration in the town. We will have the opening speech of the 'drag queen' Katrina, a Mijas native and a reference within the collective. Also, the singer Martha Perez live, and a diversity photocall, catering, gifts for attendees, and many other surprises," said the Mijas Councillor. He encouraged "all groups who work daily, to keep alive the LGTBI collective fight, to join this celebration from 8.30 pm in Las Lagunas Theatre courtyard".

Thus, Mijas will welcome its first Pride festival. The main event will start at midday at the Town Hall entrance, where the Network of Proud Municipalities, of which Mijas has been a member for the last couple of years, will read its manifesto. "It will be a celebration day but also a vindication day for as long as there is a person judged for their sexual orientation and gender identity, we cannot move forward as a society", underlines González.

After the manifesto reading, "multicoloured fans will be handed out to the Mijas Pueblo shopkeepers to raise their awareness on this day. Celebrate all the rights that have been achieved, and claim all those that we have yet to conquer", added Martínez. He explained that the slogan 'Live, feel and love free' "has been consolidated in the town after being permanently displayed in our proud corner next to the Mijas Pueblo Town Hall".

In this sense, Martinez recalled that it is not the only spot in Mijas that remembers diversity 365 days a year, "there is also the Sexual Diversity Roundabout in Las Lagunas, and the multicoloured bench on La Cala promenade".

Schools
This commitment to diversity is also transferred to the Mijas classrooms with numerous workshops, including 'We love', aimed at students in the 2nd year of ESO. "During this school year, 35 workshops have been given to more than a thousand students with the aim of raising awareness about bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity. 47% of LGTBIQ+ people have suffered discrimination. Unfortunately, there is still historical rejection and discrimination against people with different sexuality or gender identity, which is why this 28th June, we will continue to raise our voices for all those who still suffer this discrimination".

Finally, the Equality Department has announced that Las Lagunas Theatre's front will be lit up with the multicoloured flag, which will fly in the Town Hall Branches, and the Mijas Town Hall on the 28th of June "for tolerance and respect for all LGTBIQ+ people", concluded the Mayor.
