At the Viogenex group’s proposal, Mijas joined the campaign for gender violence ‘Pregunta por Ángela’ (Ask for Angela). As the Mijas Mayor himself, Josele González (PSOE), explained on Wednesday 15th. It is a code to use in bars or nightlife establishments when they need to escape an uncomfortable or risky situation. “The bar owners or employees receiving the victim’s warning will call 112, or the Local Police or other security forces in the municipality so that they can respond immediately,” said the Mijas Councillor.
For this initiative to work, the municipality’s hoteliers will be asked to place an information poster about this campaign in the women’s toilets of their premises. “So if any woman feels harassed, threatened or is suffering any uncomfortable situation, they know where to go and have a person who can help them to get out of that situation of violence,” added the Councillor for Equality and Diversity, Natalia Martinez (PSOE).
This information will also be offered in English, as more than 50 per cent of the women treated for gender violence at the Women’s Centre in Mijas are foreigners. “We all know that Mijas is a municipality with many residents of other nationalities and a lot of foreign tourism, especially now in high season. It is essential that this campaign is available to all of them,” said the Mayor of the Department of Foreigners, Arancha Lopez (Cs).
Viogenex
This initiative is already a reality in Mijas thanks to the Viogenex work, in which the areas of Equality and Diversity, Foreigners and Local Police participate, as well as the social groups of Soroptimist International Costa del Sol, Lions Club, Age Care and Red Cross. “From Soroptimist, we want to continue spreading this campaign, and we are going to visit bars and restaurants with the foreign public to talk to the owners and ask them to join this necessary project”, said Anette Skou, Vice-President of this association.
But this protocol is not new. It was born in the UK in 2016 for people in vulnerable situations in public places. “In other municipalities in Spain, it is also implemented. It is necessary to promote it, especially now that summer is starting and nightlife is already at 100%”, said Ander Echebarría, local management technician of the Mijas Red Cross.
If you ever are asked about Angela, don’t hesitate and do everything in your hand to avoid a possible gender violence case.
