Mijas, united against littering

  • The Libera project was born in 2017 to stop the impact of rubbish left in natural areas
  • Collected data will be sent to the platform that supports the Libera project.

In this initiative, promoted by the Environment Department, the Mijas Federated Society of Hunters collaborated

The Libera project aims to raise awareness and mobilise the public to keep natural spaces free of rubbish so that much more life can be released in favour of biodiversity. The initiative, promoted at a national level and in which Mijas participated, took place on 11th June in the area of El Esparragal, specifically in Arroyo Seco and Río Fuengirola. "It is a project that is carried out at the national level and aims to stop the littering of natural areas," said the Environment Councillor, Arancha Lopez (Cs), who stressed the importance of not leaving any waste in urban areas.

Actions such as this intend to raise awareness among the population. "We all must do our utmost to protect our natural spaces. The main thing is that we dispose of the waste generated in the right places. If we go on a route along a path or to enjoy nature, everything we carry in our rucksack should go back in our rucksack. We are all responsible that our natural surroundings continue to look their best", added the Councillor.

The Mijas Federated Society of Hunting Sportsmen collaborated with this initiative, which on other occasions has already carried out the waste collection in natural environments in our town. "We have been doing this activity on our initiative in collaboration with the Town Hall. Because of the pandemic, we had not done it for two years. The Environment Department suggested that we join the Libera project, and we accepted'', explained the group's President, Lázaro Porras.

Esperanza Moreno, one of the participants in this activity, pointed out the value of this type of gesture to our environment: "I think it is important that our fields are clean, that there is no rubbish. There have been times when we have found animals with plastic hooked on them. That is the reason why everything must be kept clean".

The Libera project was created by Spain's leading environmental NGO, SEO/Birdlife, in alliance with Ecoembes. It is a non-profit environmental organisation that promotes the circular economy through packaging recycling.
