The two new roundabouts on the Mijas road enter into service

  • The new roundabouts are now in operation to allow traffic to change direction
  • One of the roundabouts is in the southern part and another in the northern part, in the area of Pueblo Don Silverio and the industrial buildings (Pks 15+950 and 16+265).

The roundabouts aim to improve road safety in the urbanisations of La Loma, Pueblo Don Silverio, and Haza del Algarrobo

Work on the two roundabouts on the Mijas Pueblo road (A-387) as it passes through the urbanisations of La Loma, Pueblo Don Silverio and Haza del Algarrobo has been completed and they are now fully operational. "These are two roundabouts that were in great demand by the local residents of the area, who every day used to drive along a road that had no other option for changing direction than to get to the motorway. Now, thanks to these two roundabouts, we make it safer because we force vehicles to go at a slower speed and, in addition, we have improved a lot in terms of lighting and pedestrian crossing", says the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), who stressed that "we have gained in road signs, lighting, pedestrian crossing, and also various bus stops that have been remodelled in recent months, all to condition one of the main Mijas arteries".

Thus, these two roundabouts, which have received an investment of 739,689 euros, are now fully operational. Although the works have been divided into phases and have allowed traffic to continue during the execution of the work. Now, there is the option of vehicles changing direction that until now, had to turn around at the motorway roundabout or the ALDI roundabout. "We are committed to the mobility of the town in a demand that residents have been requesting historically and to which we are now providing a solution with these projects as, apart from the danger, users could only turn around at two points while the road had no intersections for more than 1,200 metres, so many users were making dangerous crossings in a continuous line", adds, for his part, the First Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Infrastructure and Works, José Carlos Martín (Cs).

In the same way, these two roundabouts, one on the south side and the other to the north in the area of Pueblo Don Silverio and the industrial warehouses (Pks 15+950 and 16+265), have required urban planning modifications to carry out these projects and agreements with the owners of the affected land. We are developing this sector, where there is a small amount of industrial land. This is essential as it creates wealth and most importantly, it generates jobs. We are not only helping the residents but also the businesses in the area as it increases users' mobility. With this action, we are solving the situation in the area," he said. the warehouses' specially as they were awaiting these urban development activities to obtain the relevant authorisations to operate. Furthermore, this initiative will provide legal certainty so that entrepreneurs who want to set up their business here can come to Mijas with complete peace of mind", said the Councillor for Urban Development, Andrés Ruiz (Cs).

"From the point of view of mobility and traffic, these actions will allow us to reduce the speed of vehicles, which will improve road safety. This will also allow us to act at other points, resolving historical demands such as that of the residents of La Loma when it comes to establishing new pedestrian crossings and new road elements which will improve all the safety conditions along this stretch", adds the Councillor for Transport and Mobility, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE).

  • The government team recalls that these actions will be able to be carried out thanks to the Mijas Council obtaining ownership of the road in 2018.

The government team recalls that these actions will be able to be carried out thanks to the Mijas Council obtaining ownership of the road in 2018, as the local government can act quickly without having to wait for sectoral reports from other administrations, "as a project of this magnitude has ample time to be executed, which would have been prolonged as there are other institutions involved".

For González "the Partido Popular has not been up to the task and has simply criticised the commissioning of these two important roundabouts with a crude message alluding to the fact that they are roundabouts that lead nowhere. They should tell the neighbours and the residents that they are not going anywhere." Let them tell the neighbours and traders in this area, and those from today will be using these two roundabouts. This is the Mijas Partido Popular level. We will continue to work from the government team".
