The Puerta del Ágora craft space held its second Pop-Up Market last Saturday. The last one was held in 2020. There was no absence of local products. In the heart of Mijas Pueblo and between three in the afternoon and ten at night, the cooperative opened its doors to showcase the creations of a dozen local artisans from Mijas in a new market concept in which there was everything: crafts, design, music, beer, quiches and homemade sweets. In addition, you can see how and where the artisans make their products. "The truth is that this is the second edition due to pandemic problems. We couldn't do more, but we are happy because it is an alternative leisure activity in Mijas and, on top of that, it is local. You have crafts, music, people, gastronomy and incredible beer", said Sonia Lekuona, a cooperative member.
María Vega was in charge of the gastronomy, with homemade products on sale: "it seems that quiches are the most popular. We also have good pastries, and the falafel, which has just arrived. They also seem to be enjoying it".
The next one in September
Lekuona, who is also President of the Mijas Artisans Association, said that the idea of 'Puerta del Ágora' is to hold three markets like this one a year, the next one in September. "It is always wonderful to come and visit the Mijas craftsmen and craftswomen as they do an incredible job. Today, we saw a great display. Local craftsmen and craftswomen are exhibiting their products in an open place where all visitors and neighbours can come and enjoy all the Mijas artistic talent. Not only in terms of objects but also in food and craft beer, all in a natural way", said the Councillor for Commerce, Natalia Martínez (PSOE).
From the City Council, the First Deputy Mayor José Carlos Martín (Cs) and the Councillors Laura Moreno (PSOE), Candela León (Cs), and the non-attached Councillor Esperanza Jiménez also wanted to support this School Workshop, and the Puerta del Ágora Craft Coworking initiative, where throughout the year five craftsmen work every day, and hold workshops for young people, as Martínez explained. They also value craftsmanship. One example is little Candela Tello, who bought some earrings and was surprised by the market: "I liked the donkeys made with rope, the bracelets... etc. There are some cool things". Estrella Tello was also delighted and, in addition to some gifts, she bought a star-shaped pendant, like her name. Her friend Alejo was hesitant when buying, although he liked the handicrafts.
