Three Mijas beaches renew the blue flags for their quality and services

  • In addition, El Torreón de la Cala revalidates its 'Blue Centre' award and the 'Blue Path' award for the Coastal Path
  • The awards ceremony took place this Monday morning in Chipiona.

The Mijas beaches on which this symbol of excellence flies are those of La Cala-Torreón, El Bombo, and Calahonda I-Royal Beach-La Luna

Mijas reaffirms the quality and excellence of its coastline this summer with the certification of three blue flags for its beaches of La Cala-Torreón, El Bombo and Calahonda I-Royal Beach-La Luna. The Mijas Councillor, Josele González (PSOE), and the Beaches Councillor and First Deputy Mayor, José Carlos Martín (Cs), travelled this morning to Chipiona (Cádiz) to collect these awards. In addition, the municipality's coast has once again achieved the distinctions of 'Blue Centre' for El Torreón de la Cala and the 'Blue Trail' for the Coastal Path, the only one with this recognition in the province.

"Mijas has achieved three blue flags for its beaches, a recognition that shows the quality of our waters and all the work we do in many areas, from lifeguarding and surveillance and cleaning the environment. These points are taken into account when awarding these internationally recognised awards, which reflect the excellence of the destination and the services offered by its beaches. From the government, "we will continue to work in this line to stand out in this area that positions us as a star destination on the Costa del Sol during the summer period," said the Mayor.

In this sense, González recalled that "Mijas is a reference not only in beaches but also in its surroundings thanks to the recognition of 'Blue Centre' for the 'Torreón de La Cala' and 'Blue Trail' for the Coastal Path which is the only one in the province of Malaga that holds this recognition. Both points are becoming an obligatory stop in our city for many reasons. Undoubtedly, these awards help more tourists to get to know them and decide to return to enjoy our tourist and beach offer".

Thus, of the 145 blue flags awarded in Andalusia, Malaga has obtained 44 blue flags, of which three are for Mijas. For José Carlos Martín, "this is a reward for the hard work, to ensure that our beaches are in perfect condition". In this sense, the Beaches Councillor added that "the Mijas beaches have become a benchmark for southern European beaches thanks to the municipality work. Besides, these awards are the other recognitions they receive, for the quality of their waters, their environmental care, and the range of services".

Constant work

Martin has remarked that the blue flags obtained by Mijas are the result "of constant efforts to improve and maintain the quality of our 14 kilometres of coastline that little by little, have become another of our tourist visiting cards, turning the Mijas beaches into a tourist attraction for both visitors and locals, who can take advantage of their natural heritage".

The blue flags are a distinction awarded to beaches and ports by the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), through the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), after annual inspections and audits of those municipalities that apply for it. They are voluntary and meet a series of criteria grouped into four blocks: Information and Environmental Education, Water Quality, Environmental Management and Safety and Services. Therefore, Mijas works "every day so that the town's beaches are in perfect safety, cleanliness, accessibility and sustainability conditions", said Martín.

Mijas beaches recognised

The beach of Calahonda I-Royal Beach-La Luna is quiet and sheltered, which makes it a special, and well-kept beach. It has all the necessary services, without neglecting the cleanliness of its sand and water. As a result, its visitors can enjoy a relaxing day at the beach.

After Calahonda comes La Cala de Mijas. Its first sandy area is the beach of El Bombo, which always offers favourable bathing conditions, ideal for enjoying the calm waters with the whole family. This beach is ideal for scuba diving, thanks to the transparency of its waters.

Finally, the beach of La Cala-Torreón de Mijas is in the very heart of the promenade of the coastal town, which guarantees good connections, easy access and sand where the necessary services to enjoy a large variety of activities are available.
