Greenlight for a new project of tourist interest in the area around Fuente del Algarrobo

  • González stresses that this "will generate employment, and put Mijas on the gourmet map"
  • The Town Planning Councillor, Andrés Ruiz, during today's plenary session |

The Town Planning Councillor argued that the stated project "is not just a restaurant"

The Plenary approves a project that will involve the creation of a complex that will combine restaurants, gastronomic experiences and rural accommodation.

"A space linked to catering in all its aspects, in which two very different but complementary worlds coexist: gastronomy and the countryside". This is what the Town Planning Councillor, Andrés Ruiz (Cs), said about the project approved in a plenary session today. He highlighted it as "having maximum integration with the immediate surroundings, compatible with traditional agriculture, and which spreads along the plot's terraces. A building volume on three levels which guarantees the reduction of the visual impact". For Ruiz, it is "an integrated and well thought out project with which Mijas will gain a tourist and gastronomic facility with a wide choice, adding value to the area".

The project will be in the Fuente del Algarrobo area, close to Mijas Pueblo, in an undevelopable area. The action project is a tool that the law allows in these cases, and has needed the approval of the Plenary to follow its course. The area where the project is has motivated the vote against the non-attached Councillor Esperanza Jiménez. "We are not criticising the project, but the chosen area. To access a road is planned from the Vial Sur. It is a visual and landscape alteration, and I believe that Mijas does not deserve this", she said. In the same vein, the non-attached Councillor, Carlos Rivero, argued that "although the regulations allow these projects, I do not agree that they should be on undeveloped land".

The Popular Councillor Mario Bravo questioned the corporation on whether "it is convenient to open another restaurant, and occupy a rustic land with 14 rural houses". The Councillor disagreed with the mentioned access from the Vial Sur "because it is a narrow lane for infrequent use by vehicles". In addition, Bravo has stated that there is no guarantee that "it is going to be worth it for the Mijas people to lose this natural interest area based on a project of tourist interest".

More than a restaurant

The Town Planning Councillor argued that the stated project "is not just a restaurant. It is a space of knowledge in gastronomic matters where not only food will be tasted but where classes, seminars and workshops will be given, and research projects will be promoted in collaboration with other institutions". Ruiz argued that "to understand this project, you have to know the people behind it". As he explained, they are a Mijas couple linked to the world of gastronomy who after training and working in prestigious restaurants, are returning to their homeland "with an integrating and benchmark project".

Mayor Josele González closed the round of speeches by stating that "when projects like this come along, we have to put everything we can on the table to ensure that they go ahead". The Mayor stated that he believed in the proposal "since they came to me three years ago" and highlighted that "it is going to create employment, and put us on the gastronomic map", which is why he encouraged the whole corporation to get to know it in depth.

Both PSOE, Ciudadanos and the non-attached Councillor Juan Carlos Maldonado voted in favour. The PP and the non-attached Councillor, Esperanza Jiménez, voted against, and the non-attached Councillor Carlos Rivero abstained.
