Mijas takes over the elderly residence and dependent people's home construction

  • The next step will be the project drafting for the tendering process
  • The plenary has unanimously approved the municipalisation of the project

The plenary has unanimously approved the municipalisation of the project, which contemplates an investment of 10 million euros

Today, another firm step has been taken towards the Mijas residence construction and day centre for the elderly and dependents. The government team has presented an urgent proposal for the municipalisation of the project to become effective, and the Town Hall can assume the construction of the same. The motion passed unanimously, although not before generating a tense debate between the government team and the Popular bench.

The Councillor for the Senior Citizens, Tamara Vera (PSOE), was presenting the point. She recalled tha the construction of the residence and the centre is continuing, which also responds to a long-standing demand of the municipality's seniors. "I would like to thank the work and commitment on the seniors' initiative, the Association of Retired and Pensioners 'Vírgen de la Peña' as, without a doubt, they have been working on the future development of the residence in our municipality," said Vera. She also stressed that the document presented today in the plenary includes the viability study for the seniors' centre construction. It includes the economic-financial study, the tender and contracting services for the drafting of the basic project and its execution, the report on residential and municipal care services for the elderly in a situation of dependency, the daycare unit report, and the application and reports on the lack of duplication, among others.

The PP Municipal Group has criticised the fact that this project has been presented as an urgent issue. " You send us 158 pages in less than 24 hours before the plenary session, and now you want to approve an important project as it is the construction of the residence as a matter of urgency, is not acceptable. I believe that the elderly deserve a little better treatment," said the Popular Councillor Mario Bravo.

  • This plot of land in Las Lagunas will be the site of a future senior citizens home.

Now, the step we are taking is to carry out the municipalisation to provide the service in the future. This residence for the elderly will be a reality as the project is very advanced. A lot of work has been done, and many work hours have been put in," said the Town Planning Councillor, Andrés Ruiz (Cs). The Social Services Councillor, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE), also explained that "the Town Hall assumes the construction responsibility for the residence execution through the municipalisation process". He said that the next steps will be "the project drafting, the tendering and the places agreement with the Junta de Andalucía".

The Popular Councillor Lourdes Burgos spoke in the second turn. She assured that "the residence will not be public, it will be private, and will no longer be in the hands and control of all the Mijas citizens" and added that "this is a declaration of intentions. You have not worked at all". Statements to which the Councillor for the Seniors responded: "The work you have done, zero. How many files on the residence were brought to the plenary for approval? Zero.

Senior citizens' residence and day centre

The project includes the construction of a residence and a day centre for the elderly and dependents. The first will offer 136 places, of which 60% will be in shared rooms and 40% in double rooms. It will have a social character and be a permanent residence, both for people with autonomy and for those with some degree of dependency. The day centre will have 30 places. For both, specific multidisciplinary programmes will be designed to offer support and individualised care, and promote adaptation and integration, besides social and health care and therapeutic activities. The day centre will also promote activities to prevent loss of abilities, and Vera stresses that it will offer respite time for carers.

The construction of the residence will involve an investment of 10 million euros. The building will be located in Las Lagunas, next to the Vega de Mijas secondary school, on a municipal plot of almost 7,000 square metres. This project responds to a long-standing request from the municipality's senior citizens. "The only truth is that today a necessary and obligatory procedure has been approved, and it is also a step forward for the municipality.
