The Beaches of La Cala, El Bombo & Calahonda renew its blue flags

  • These awards recognise the environmental quality, cleanliness, and provision of coastal services
  • The Mayor, the Beaches Councillor, and the Junta’s Tourism Delegate in Malaga reported the news in La Cala |

Andalusia has obtained 145 blue flags for its beaches this year

This summer, three blue flags will, once again, fly on the beaches of Mijas. Specifically, the beaches of Calahonda (including Royal Beach and La Luna), El Bombo, and La Cala will renew for this award. The Environmental and Consumer Education Association (Adeac) is responsible for granting this recognition, which highlights the water quality of the Mijas coastline, the extensive lifeguard service, coastal safety measures, and the efforts made in environmental matters, cleanliness and provision of services.

“It is a complex job. These recognitions put the municipal services to the test. The Beaches Department works all year round to have everything in perfect condition, knowing that sun and beach tourism is our main economic and tourist asset. Today, we are delighted as these awards have been validated,” said the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE).
In addition to the three flags, the Coastal Path has also been awarded the Blue Trail distinction, being the only route in the province with this award. The Watchtowers Interpretation Centre, which houses the Torreón de La Cala, has also been classified as a Blue Centre. The beaches of Mijas are endorsed with the ISO 14001 environmental standard, nine Q Quality flags, four areas for people with functional diversity, and have the ‘Safe Tourism Certified’ seal, which values the safety of the COVID-19 free destination. The Beaches Councillor highlighted, “the blue flag recognises the quality of the service provided to tourists, the sustainability of the beaches and, above all, that these infrastructures are cared for, and looked after to ensure that they provide the services with the quality standards required by the organisation that awards them”. The First Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Beaches, José Carlos Martín (Cs), said “it is not easy to get blue flags although the most difficult thing is to maintain them. In this sense, Mijas has long been a municipality that continues to provide that quality service to all those who visit us”.

Record number of flags

Andalusia has obtained 145 blue flags for its beaches this year, 44 of which have been for the province of Malaga. “Back in 2019, we had 19 flags. Today, we can talk about having 36 on the coast of Malaga beaches, six in the harbours, and two in the sustainable boats,” explained the Junta’s Tourism Delegate in Malaga, Nuria Rodríguez (Cs). By 2021, Malaga achieved three more flags for its beaches.
