The United Nations General Assembly named 2021 as the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables, highlighting “the urgent need to ensure that food systems are more sustainable and equitable,” Soroptimist International said in a press release. Thus, the association decided to participate in this program to learn more about this change call, developing dialogues that took place in Mijas, Málaga, and Seville to get an idea about the local food system, as well as its challenges and solutions.
“We are participating in this project, and we are the only ones in Andalusia. The next step was to organise garden workshops here in Mijas that is also part of the food system of this program,” explained the collective’s Vice-President, Anette Skou.
“Finally,” Skou continued, “We created the first Soroptimist award, ‘Nurture your optimism’; a project for which we invite everyone to submit one or more candidates. They can be companies, or organisations that promote sustainable living, whether in production, processing, transport, consumption or impact on health, the environment or society”. Candidates can apply online until May 15th.
Soroptimist will work together with a group made up of representatives from various organisations such as Aula del Mar, Justicia Alimentaria, Cruz Roja Málaga and Sabor a Málaga. The winners will be presented on 7th June at La Noria, a social innovation centre belonging to the Málaga Provincial Council.
