At the suggestion of the residents of Santana Neighbourhood, the Parks and Gardens Department has promoted a new initiative to embellish this entrance to the centre of Mijas from the ring road. The idea is to turn a concrete mural, so far empty and unused, into a real work of art which will also pay tribute to past generations of the village. “We want to portray the work of many years ago. Some instances are, the quarry workers, the work of esparto grass, La Puente washing place used by the women, and others. It will be a nice reminder of our elders”, explained the Councillor of Parks and Gardens, Laura Moreno (PSOE), on Thursday 5th. Benito Leal, a municipal worker and artist at the same time, is directing this painting project with the help of other colleagues from Operational Services dedicated to painting. And don’t be mistaken, as all the scribbles you see in the photographs, are only used as orientation grids for the final drawing. “It’s a technique that is getting a lot of attention, and it’s used in urban art and graffiti. However, for this mural, we won’t only use spray paint, but also paintbrushes so that it will be more artistic,” said the author of the work.
The mural is almost 50 metres long and six metres high. And it will not be the only one, as it will soon be extended to include a second space. Weather permitting, this new work of art in Mijas will be a reality in a month.
