Deporinter and the Guardia Civil Traffic Department have programmed, for safety reasons, a series of traffic cuts for the end of the second stage of the "Vuelta Ciclista a Andalucía Femenina" Elite Women, which finishes in Mijas Pueblo.
The Public Roads Councillor, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE), has informed of the traffic disruption. Other measures include a parking ban from 7 am until the end of the event, around 6 pm, in the avenues of Mexico, Virgen de la Peña, Compás and the Fuente La Seda Square. "The critical hours will pivot from 1.30 pm and 4 pm, depending on the race and arrival times of the bunch in the area," Cruz announced.
At 2:15 pm, 45 minutes before the end of the race, traffic will be completely cut off, according to the Mijas Town Hall. "From that time onwards, the access from Avenida de Méjico, Avenida Virgen de la Peña and the ring road to the village will be cut off. This will have an impact on a series of public services such as the bus, bus lines and school services as it will coincide with the IES Villa de Mijas and the San Sebastián school exits," said Cruz.
But it will also affect other services, as the Councillor pointed out: "It will make it impossible to carry out services such as donkey taxis, horse-drawn carriages. Also, it will affect private vehicles and even some bar terraces that occupy part of the public road in that area".
The taxi stop will be at the Malaga Street entrance, just at the junction with Avenida de Mexico. Buses and school buses will also stay at the village entrance, near the petrol station. "An agreement has been reached with the San Sebastián school. Children's departure and transport will be carried forward, while the IES Villa de Mijas, whose departure time is around the time the bunch is due to arrive, will be carried out normally. Some sections might coincide with the bunch or with the race and, in that case, the arrival of the children would be delayed," said Cruz, who stressed that "all these modifications are subject to the race rhythm.
Apart from this, Cruz has made known the alternatives for getting around the town or leaving to another location: "Roads are accessible through Malaga street, Coin street, down La Alqueria, through others such as Rancho de La Luz and connected to the Mijas road, as well as the Compás area, Vial Sur, Fuente la Seda and Santa Rosa urbanisation, will be escape routes for any emergency that may occur".
The Town Hall reminds residents to contact the Local Police and Civil Protection for more information.
Traffic Disruption on Thursday 5th May
There will also be traffic disruptions on Thursday the 5th of May as the return journey will leave from Fuengirola and pass through the road to Coín. "The official departure will take place on the Coín road at the Victims of Terrorism roundabout at around 9:40 am, and the cuts will take place minutes before, so we think that there will be no major disruptions, nor will there be any anomalies in school transport or any other service, except for the M-223 line, which runs through that area to Entrerríos and may be affected with delays," said Cruz.
