From Wednesday 20th, wearing the mask will no longer be compulsory indoors

  • The Council of Ministers has approved this measure today
  • The Council of Ministers today approved the end of face masks' use.

However, the use of face masks remains mandatory in public transport, health centres, homes and pharmacies

The Council of Ministers approved the end of face masks' use today.  From Wednesday 20th, it will not be compulsory to wear them indoors, including in educational establishments. However, there are some exceptions: the obligation to wear them on public transport, including taxis, in health services, in pharmacies and in residential homes will be maintained for visitors and workers, but not for those who live there.

In workplaces it will no longer be compulsory, although its use will be assessed by the occupational risk services of each company. The use of masks is now a personal choice for each citizen. However, we are recommended to make a responsible use of protection beyond the obligatory nature. An important recommendation is to continue using it in small, poorly ventilated spaces. Thus, after almost two years of wearing masks indoors, the new regulation also eliminates the obligation to wear masks at mass and sporting events. The new regulation was published on Wednesday 20th April in the Official State Gazette (BOE).

Content of the articles of Royal Decree 286/2022 of 19th April:

1. Persons aged six years and over are obliged to wear masks in the following cases:

a) In health centres, services and establishments in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 1277/2003, of 10th October, which establishes the general bases for the authorisation of health centres, services and establishments by workers, visitors and patients with the exception of persons admitted when they remain in their room.

b) In socio-health centres, workers and visitors when they are in shared areas.

(c) In air, rail, cable and bus transport and public passenger transport. In enclosed spaces, on ships, and boats where it is not possible to maintain the 1.5 metres distance, except in cabins, when they are shared by groups of cohabitants.

The obligation contained in the previous paragraph shall not apply in the following cases:

a) To persons with an illness or respiratory difficulty that may be aggravated by the mask use or due to their disability or dependence, do not have the autonomy to remove the mask or have behavioural alterations that make its use unfeasible.

b) In the event that, due to the nature of the activities, the use of the mask is incompatible, in accordance with the indications of the health authorities.
