This is what the Regional Federation of Ampas (Parents' Associations) of the Costa del Sol demanded this Monday, from the IES Las Lagunas High School, with members of the Mijas Ampas, neighbours, and different groups, as well as "Alternativa Mijeña". "We need a nurse per school performing many tasks such as preventive work, training, special needs children's health care, for diabetic children, in short, for many types of diseases. We must go for this nurse position which in Madrid is already enjoying, and in other communities are also planning. Andalusia can not be left behind, "said the President of the Regional Ampas Federation from la Costa del Sol, and Ampa “La Defensa” (IES Las Lagunas), Miguel Gallardo.

They say that the presence of this figure is important so that "health care is not left behind at the school doors". This was pointed out by the Andalusian member of the National and International School Nurses' Association, Araceli Quintero, who emphasised "when a company has more than 500 workers, it has to have a company nurse, even in a prison. Why don't the children have one? Why do we leave the children behind in this regard? We have to take care of children's health, and train adults to look after their health.

The non-attached Mijas Town Hall Councillor, Esperanza Jiménez, joined the rally. She said that she supported the Ampas as "they have been asking for the role of the school nurse for a long time. After what has happened in the "Sierra de Mijas" high school, I think it should be a reality as children's health is at stake.

The Ampas Regional Federation advocates reinforcing the teaching syllabus with health content, such as first aid workshops. "Teachers need to know about cardiopulmonary resuscitation, a minimum of health knowledge, and so do pupils, they must know what to do at any given moment if a child suffers an accident or a person is at risk," Gallardo stressed.

In addition, they are calling for an increase in the provision of technical health resources in schools, "that there should be DEAS (External Automatic Defibrillator) in each centre. Also, there must be someone trained to use it in case the DEAS are needed. We must change radically, we must be clear that the DEAS are needed and institutions, the Education Ministry or even the City Council must be committed to carry out these new measures," added Gallardo.

The intention of the Ampas federation is to set up a platform to fight for this, similar to the one that already exists at the regional level, 'Enfermería Escolar Ya', endorsed by the Andalusian Nursing Council which seeks signatures support on Change.org.
