The first road safety park opens to the public in Mijas

  • It is located in Las Lagunas, in the old Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente square, and has a surface area of 2,700 square metres
  • The park was officially opened by members of the municipal corporation.

As well as offering a wide circuit with traffic signs, the park has an eye-catching vertical garden, a storeroom, and modern toilets for visitors

Last Friday, April 1st, the first road safety park in the municipality was officially opened. It is located in Las Lagunas centre, very close to the Regino Hernández Sports Complex, in the Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente square, a square which, according to the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), "remained with hardly any use, almost in a state of abandonment and, during the time it was a dog park, it received many complaints of bad smells and dirt". For this reason, the Councillor went on explaining that the Mijas Town Hall decided to transform this 2,700 square metre space, investing just over 730,000 euros.

The change has been overwhelming, according to the residents and shopkeepers of the area. In fact, says Soraya Lloret, "we have loved it as it has a large children's play area, lots of benches to sit on, plenty of bins, the toilets are great,  there is also a green area, and everything is well signposted, which is important".

As for the extensive road safety education circuit offered by this new park in Las Lagunas, Andrés Cámara, an Intermediate Cycle Course for Guides in the Natural Environment and Leisure Time at IES Sierra de Mijas, said that "it's great that the little ones can learn the signs and traffic rules in such a practical way, with their bicycles, scooters and skates, all for their safety and self-protection", while Lidia del Corral, another pupil from the same school, added that "thanks to things like this, in the future these children, instead of using so many cars, will be able to cycle more on the road".

In this sense, the Mijas Mayor announced that "the Mobility area is already programming recreational and educational activities in this park throughout this coming year, similar to those we were doing in schools, but now we will have a space and an enclosure perfectly equipped for it".

Work execution on time and on budget

During the opening, the Works and Infrastructures Councillor, José Carlos Martín (Cs), thanked the technical team, who have been very close to this project, to the construction company, that has execute this new leisure and recreation space in time and shape,"and to everyone who, in some way, has collaborated to carry out the completion of this important infrastructure. It not only provides a service like any other infrastructure but also offers joy, happiness and feeling, as we have thought of the little ones and everyone who wants to come and use it".

For his part, González also stressed the importance of revitalising this central point of Las Lagunas, so much that "until today, none of the shops, bars and restaurants in the area had a terrace on this side, precisely because it was a neglected square. Now, with this park families will also be able to enjoy a snack while the children are in a safe environment, enjoying themselves and also learning".

The IES Sierra de Mijas teacher, Toño López, also present at the inauguration ceremony, assured us that "it is a park that is going to be liked because it will allow physical exercise in a simple way and very close to home, skating or riding a bike".

Other park features

In addition to the play area, this new space houses a large and eye-catching vertical garden, a storage room and modern toilets for users. "It has been a relatively simple project, and the work has been carried out normally," said Councillor José Carlos Martín, stating that "one of the most important parts of the project has been to waterproof the underground car park roof, although without major inconveniences".

In the last six years, the government team has undertaken the creation of other important parks for the municipality such as the Water Park, La Cala Hills, 'El Encuentro’, ‘Calistenia’, ‘Olisol’, 'El Hipódromo', 'El Limonar' or the dog parks located in 'El Ensanche de La Cala' and Sector 31 in Las Lagunas. "In the coming weeks, we will give more projects’ news that we have in the portfolio, and that will be a reality in our last government year ," concluded Josele González.
