Today marks 37 days since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in which 148 Ukrainian children have died so far as a result of the war. In Mijas, the support for those affected by the war is unanimous, and this was seen in a homage act to these children yesterday. The Cortijo Don Elías hosted a minute's silence in their memory prepared by the Ukrainian community.
Teresa Félix, one of the "Renta Básica workers" who are in charge of assisting the arrival of refugees and preparing goods to send to Ukraine, said that "we have put 148 little shoes, candles and figures of little angels to remember the little ones who died. The Ukrainians are having a terrible time as it is hard what is happening. Nobody expected it. We will continue to support and help them in any way we can", said Felix. He explained: "We are also in charge of attending to people who come to donate materials and products, pack them, label medicines and then send them to Ukraine".

Ukrainian residents in the municipality, refugees in Mijas, and the local Councillors Tamara Vera (PSOE) and Laura Moreno (PSOE) attended the event to pay tribute to the deceased children. Alla Falkovska, a Ukrainian resident in Mijas, said she had "no peace of mind as we have been at war for many days. Every morning, we wake up waiting to see if it will end. We do whatever we can to feel satisfied" helping those affected by the conflict.
