Last Thursday, on the occasion of International Transgender Awareness Day, the Mijas Town Hall Equality Department organised an event in the Plaza de San Valentín in Las Lagunas claiming transgender people's rights. At the event, a manifesto was read, and the Zumba Pink group performed a flashmob. The Association of Families of Transgender Children was in charge of reading the text. They asked for support not only from society but also from their families and the closest collective members' environment.
"We want to give all the visibility to the collective every day of the year, not just today. It is true that perhaps today is a special day, to claim all the rights, freedoms and opportunities that have yet to be achieved for all trans people. Unfortunately, within the LGBT collective, they are the most vulnerable," said the Councillor for Equality and Diversity, Natalia Martínez (PSOE). One Zumba Pink member declared: "We want to give a voice to all those trans people who often have life and society's difficulties. Everything is very complicated for them".
Those present raised their voices through the dance of this group. They chose the songs 'Todos me Miran and 'A Contracorriente', which they dedicated to trans people. The Councillor also affirmed that "we wanted to do this protest dance with loud and clear messages of no violence, no hate and no discrimination. I raise my voice for trans people". The Equality Department reminded people they can go to the Women's Centre (telephone 952 58 90 01/ 952 19 73 34, email cmujer@mijas.es) to seek the support they need, where they will find information, legal advice and psychological support.
