The City Council intensifies the cleaning work to deal with the haze

  • According to the Street Cleaning Department, there are currently 11 water containers and seven pressure washers carrying out these tasks
  • The haze has stained many places with red, which has made it necessary to reinforce the cleaning work |

The Mijas Fire Brigade and personnel from "Renta Básica", and Parks and Gardens are also collaborating in the municipality cleaning

The Haze, those particles of air in suspension coming from the Sahara that have hit the peninsula in the last few days, has caused havoc in the streets and roads of many Spanish municipalities. Thus, Mijas Town Hall announced this morning the implementation of a cleaning plan to alleviate the effects caused by this storm. According to the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), "we have used all the resources at our disposal to solve and minimise the effects of the haze, not only on public roads but also in sports and educational areas". To this end, the Street Cleaning Department has put to work "11 water containers and seven pressure washers in the streets", according to the Councillor of the Department, Laura Moreno (PSOE). In addition, she explains, there is also "reinforcement and support from the Mijas Fire Brigade, and staff from Parks and Gardens", the "Renta Básica" programme and municipal workers.

The Councillor of Mijas wanted to convey a message of "patience" to the population, as "we have several weeks of work ahead. Now, we are concentrating our efforts on clearing the area to avoid slips and falls in the event of future rain, especially near areas where there are more elderly people or even children, such as health centres and retirement homes, as well as schools and high schools". When these tasks are completed, the Mayor continued, "we will extend the cleaning work throughout the municipal area. And, once a few weeks have passed, and the mud on the ground has dried, we will change the cleaning system, sweeping the clay directly, and then carry out a final sweeping".

These tasks will take several weeks so that the municipality will look as it did before the haze. The Town Hall hopes to get rid of all the mud remains, and if it does not, "we will make more resources available to eliminate it", concluded Moreno.
