Mijas Town Hall has already paid all the aid granted to the tourism sector under the Cometha Plan. In total, 612,000 euros have been granted, which will provide economic respite to the beneficiary companies of this line of the plan, which was created to minimise the impacts of the economic crisis resulting from the pandemic, as announced by the First Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs): “In the last few days the last payments have been made to each of the establishments that applied for aid from the Tourism line of the Cometha Plan. We have paid almost 612,000 euros to different companies in the tourism sector”. According to Martín, this aid, granted to 72% of the applicants, represents economic support for businesses in the sector, one of the hardest hit by the crisis. “For us, it is a satisfaction to have collaborated or to have provided assistance to all these companies in the tourism sector, which have been badly affected by the pandemic and which are also generating employment,” added the Councillor. The Cometha Tourism Plan included aid of up to 50,000 euros depending on the type of tourist accommodation, such as hotels or tourist flats, and up to 75,000 euros in the case of golf courses, depending on the number of holes.
Major investment
The Tourism Department highlights the importance of public-private collaboration to maintain jobs in companies benefiting from this aid, such as the hotel VIK Gran Hotel Costa del Sol, with a regular average of 80 workers, which in summer rises to 100. The Tourism Councillor also thanked the staff of his department and that of Employment for their work to bring this plan forward and recalled the efforts of the administration for the OREA Plan, recognised by the Andalusian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, for the revitalisation of the economy. “Let’s not forget that we put 12 million euros on the table for the OREA Plan and another 10.3 million euros for the Cometha”, explained Martín. This last plan had two lines, the Employment, and Tourism, but between the two amounts I think it is a pioneer investment, and is a reference not only in Malaga and Andalusia but nationally,” said the Councillor. He also stressed the indefinite achievement of Mijas’ qualification as a Zone of Great Tourist Affluence, a figure that also influences the employment generation, and the promotion of the economy.
Tourism promotion
In addition to the Cometha Plan, the Tourism Department is working hand in hand with the sector’s businessmen to promote Mijas as a preferred tourist destination in southern Europe. “We have managed to get these businesses to come back, and to maintain themselves, as well as to focus on the ‘out of season’ tourist that allows us to maintain the economy 365 days a year,” said the Tourism Councillor, José Carlos Martín (Cs).
The area highlighted two recent actions in tourism promotion to break the seasonality: the city ‘Mijas, Sun and Golf’ promotion of the golf brand, and the actions aimed at the oriental public through virtual guided tours in different Asian languages. The Japanese are a loyal public to Mijas. They are gradually returning, also in low season months. In addition, the prospects for the high season are also good “All the agencies point that we will have better July, August, and September months than those of 2019,” he added.
Already in 2021, Mijas grew by 69% in ‘eBooking’ searches, and in the portal ‘clubrural.com’ the municipality was placed as one of the 20 rural coastal destinations preferred by its users in Spain. In 2022, Mijas has been awarded the distinction of being the capital of rural tourism 2022, in Malaga, according to the same website.
