The idea came from Svetlana Krylova, the Universidad Popular's Russian teacher, who has been teaching Russian for five years now at the municipal school, which immediately welcomed the initiative. In just a few days, Spanish classes for Ukrainian refugees displaced to Mijas were organised. Last Friday, they began in Las Lagunas Cultural Centre. They did so in two groups of ten people each. "In time, they will be able to speak Spanish and have Spanish friends and work. I think very soon, they will be able to speak perfect Spanish with our help," said Krylova.
Indeed, this is another way of helping the war refugees who have started to arrive in Mijas, such as Anatolli Sidorov and Tamara Aliabieva. Both come from Kiev. They have barely been in our country for two weeks and have already signed up for these classes, determined to learn our language. "We came displaced from Ukraine to live a normal life in Spain and find a future, a job. I don't want the government to support me forever. I want to work for that I have to learn Spanish", said Sidorov; while Aliabieva explained that she came with her son, "we fled a fortnight ago when the bombings started in the city. I want to learn Spanish because I love it. I think it is a beautiful language and Spanish people are very nice. I would like to find a job, a future".
The Spanish classes for Ukrainians are held in Las Lagunas at the Cultural Centre on Fridays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm and from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. These classes will probably have to be extended as there is already a waiting list of more than 20 people.
