Volunteers take part in a new plastic clean-up on the coastline

The initiative took place on Saturday 12th at El Chaparral beach as part of the 'Living without plastics' programme

A new plastic clean-up day was organised on the Mijas coastline this weekend. This time, the activity took place at El Chaparral beach, and several associations that dedicate their efforts to caring for the environment joined in. Mi Moana, AndaLimpia and Amigos del Mar, among others, collaborated in this activity which is carried out periodically, in coordination with the Mijas Town Hall Environment Department.

"It is an activity that aims to inform and raise awareness of the importance that we should all reduce the use of plastics, especially the single-use plastic, and in the case that it has to be used, then be reused and finally recycled. It is paramount that we all be aware as we only have one planet, and it is everyone's responsibility to keep it healthy", said the Councillor for the Environment, Arancha López (Cs), during the day.

The volunteers spent Saturday morning walking around El Chaparral collecting any waste they found on their way. "We found a lot of plastic, cotton buds that people throw in the toilet, fishermen's nets... and sometimes very unusual things and lots of cigarette butts," said one of the volunteers, Leticia Cantero.

"We are part of the AndaLimpia Association, we organise awareness-raising activities, cleaning beaches, streams, mountains... the natural environment of the area, in short. We have come to do our bit in cleaning up the beach. We are several associations that are organising different cleaning days along the Malaga coast during March," added Gerardo González, a member of the group.

Social awareness

The volunteers encourage everyone to join in this gesture, but they recognise that the most important thing is to raise awareness. "Educating people not to litter, because then we won't have to clean up", said Gloria Rojo, another volunteer. "I think it is a necessary task, and I encourage everyone to join this initiative. Today, for example, it is a very nice day, and besides enjoying the environment, we are doing a good job," she added.

The campaign is called 'Live without plastics' and the aim is to raise awareness among the population about caring for the natural environment. "It is essential that we are aware that with our habits, we are either helping to maintain our environment or, on the contrary, polluting it. Thousands of waste products reach our seas and harm our marine fauna. Information and awareness must reach all citizens so that they know that day by day with their good habits, they can prevent these plastics from reaching our seas and oceans," added López.

Reduce, reuse and recycle is the goal. Thus, all the waste collected on the beach was then taken to the Punto Limpio.
