"As we are women, we put up with job insecurity. As we are women, we tolerate the wage gap. As we are women, we have to choose between motherhood and a career or a double working day. As we are women, we are subject to glass ceilings. As we are women, we bear the burden of unshared responsibilities. As we are women, all the burden falls on us, damaging our physical and emotional state. As we are women, we suffer male violence". Institutions representatives, trade unions, associations and women's groups in the municipality have been responsible for reading the Mijas Town Hall manifesto on the occasion of International Women's Day. A text that highlights the problems faced by women today.
The manifesto also includes the following agreements adopted by the Mijas Town Council in plenary session in order to achieve a more equal and just society: "To continue implementing the Equal Opportunities between Women and Men Municipal Strategic Plan, valid until 2024; to implement, together with the Negotiating Committee, the Mijas Town Hall Plan for Equality between Women and Men, recently approved, to comply with the strategic lines of the State Pact against Gender Violence". Other commitments included in the document are "to work towards a truly egalitarian society, with a firm collective and individual commitment by all the agents involved in the fight for Equality, guaranteeing gender mainstreaming in the municipal policy action lines; and to urge the Spain and the Junta de Andalusia governments to continue promoting public policies aimed at closing the inequality gaps that are still pending: labour and salary, the digital gap or inequality in the field of co-responsibility".
Institutional assessment
Today is a day of celebration and vindication, whose slogan is 'Unstoppable. We are 8M'. " Every year, it is necessary to remember the inequality situation that exists, not only throughout the world but also in our country, between men and women," said the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE). He pointed out that "it is an inequality situation of which we have reliable data, which clarify that there is still a long way to go and, therefore, we must continue to advance in the rights' equality between men and women in our country.
For her part, the Equality and Diversity Councillor, Natalia Martínez (PSOE), denounced that: "as we are women, we continue to suffer discrimination, and this has to end, which is why, from the Town Hall, we agreed on a series of commitments that will allow us to continue working and achieve a more feminist Mijas".
The Ciudadanos Councillor Mari Carmen González pointed out that: "it is a day to celebrate and look back, to remember where we come from and where women are now, and if we compare ourselves with previous generations, mothers and grandmothers, we have achieved a lot" and added that "our generations have had mothers who have worked hard so that, we could achieve what they were denied".
The Mijas Town Hall invites you to participate in the different institution events that are programmed on the occasion of 8M during the week.
