Ping pong and chess tables are installed in the Virgen de la Peña Square viewpoint

  • The Parks and Gardens and Youth Departments have been in charge of their installation
  • The Youth, Parks and Gardens Councillor, Tamara Vera and Laura Moreno, respectively, together with two Villa de Mijas Ampa's members

This is a request from the IES Villa de Mijas school parents' association

The viewpoint area in Virgen de la Peña Square is one of the Mijas Pueblo teenagers' meeting points. It has, as you know, some of the best views of the coast but it was missing something, recreational places like these. For this reason, a ping pong and a chess table were installed to make their meetings more fun, especially during the weekends. This is a demand that the IES Villa de Mijas AMPA has made to the Mijas Town Hall government team. "We have responded to this request quickly. We met just a month ago, and today, we see the results," said the Parks and Gardens Councillor, Laura Moreno (PSOE), who added that "there will be subsequent meetings as what we want is to energise and make leisure alternatives available to young people in our municipality.

The Parks and Gardens Area has been responsible for these play tables installation in coordination with the Mijas Town Hall Youth Department. The Councillor in charge, Tamara Vera (PSOE), stressed that "this initiative arises from the work line they maintain with the Mijas secondary school parents, and that in the coming weeks, they will be working with the young people themselves. They can send them those youth initiatives they want to be implemented in the municipality, and can be developed in coordination".
The demand also arose from the parent's desire for the children to return to play in the street after the pandemic confinement.

This was stated by a member of the IES Villa de Mijas, Alejandra Soto, who said that "we were asking for the implementation of some kind of low-cost infrastructure, for recreational purposes, to return to occupy the street as the COVID-19 has made us stay indoors for too long. Now, when the situation allows it, we have to go back out and share spaces like these, where young people can gather".

The only thing left is to be aware of its proper use and take care of the street furniture. "It is for all the Mijas people's enjoyment. It all comes out of our taxes so, I think it should be valued and respected so that we can all enjoy these leisure areas," concluded Moreno.
