Soroptimist celebrates its first workshop on traditional and sustainable agriculture

  • The initiative counted with the collaboration of La Alegría de la Huerta collective and the Foreigners' Department
  • Up to 21 people of different nationalities took part in this initiative

21 people of different nationalities participated in this activity, which took place on a plot of land in Valtocado

Last Saturday, the International Association Soroptimist Costa del Sol held its first workshop on traditional and sustainable cultivation. Up to 21 people of different nationalities took part in this initiative, in which La Alegría de la Huerta group and the Foreigners' Department also took part. The activity was outdoors, in a Valtocado plot of land. It was a workshop designed for the leaf and root vegetables’ sowing. "In just two hours, the group learned the most commonly sown in this area, when to do it, at what time of year, how much watering it needs according to our climate. They learned how to set up a real Mijas vegetable garden. All this explained in English and Spanish", summarised by the Mijas Town Hall Foreigners Councillor, Arancha López (Cs), who also attended the event.

  • The activity took place in a Valtocado plot, belonging to La Alegría de la Huerta Association

La Alegría de la Huerta President, Antonia Núñez, was in charge of explaining the procedure to the participants. She learned from her grandparents about this type of traditional agriculture. "I spoke to them about the traditional crops, those that do not use chemical products, only organic fertilisers that we can produce, for example, with the remains of pruning. I also insisted on the importance of making the most of the land, making rotations so as not to exhaust the soil and also to avoid the appearance of pests," she said.

This was the first of five workshops organised by Soroptimists to promote a sustainable food system, as recommended by the United Nations. "We agree with what the UN advocates because caring for the earth benefits everyone ultimately. We must learn to live more with nature because it also helps our mental well-being," said Daphne Theunissen, Vice-President of the association.

The next sessions will be on 12th March, 9th April, 14th May and 11th June, all in the Valtocado orchard.
