The Mijas Mayor, Josele González (PSOE), and the Social Services Councillor, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE), continue with their meetings’ calendar with the different social groups that received some subsidy from the City Council in 2021. “This week, we have been with Apaffer, a group to which we have allocated 7,500 euros to continue working with their members in therapies aimed not only at improving their physical quality of life but also psychological. Then, we have met with AFA, the Association of relatives of Alzheimer’s patients, which we have subsidised with 10,000 euros to continue providing help to these 24 families in Mijas. Next, we have met with Afesol, a mental health group that has received a 65,000 euros grant to assist more than 250 Mijeños between users and family members. They work not only in its day centre but also through its employment centre, “said the First Councillor.
Last week, we were with Adimi and the Spanish Cancer Association (AECC), this round of meetings aims to hear first-hand the social associations that serve in the municipality, and that “as they tell us themselves, are the recipients of those people neglected by public health, added González, who also recalled that the Mijas Town Hall is “one of those that contribute most to the functioning of these groups, which are essential for many families and which have experienced two difficult years with their income reduced and without being able to hold charity events to finance themselves due to the pandemic”.
On the other hand, these meetings serve as a thermometer to assess the aid that the City Council has allocated and will allocate to local groups. “To see how it has been useful for their functioning and also to find out their needs, what new projects they have, and what options we have to continue contributing to these projects. For example, in the case of AFA, they have already presented the possibility of acquiring an adapted van to transport Mijas citizens who have to travel to their centre in Fuengirola. Many of these families have an agreement with the Regional Government (Junta de Andalucía). However, it does not cover the cost of the journey, which would be paid for by the families. We believe it is important to provide them transport”, explained Zapico, who added that in the Afesol case, as well as the economic aid, “they have been given two important spaces for their exploitation, such as the Carromato de Max and the exhibition hall of the Torreón de La Cala”.
Finally, the Mijas Councillor recalled that this past year, “the Town Hall has granted this aid to Apaffer to cover their expenses. Especially, after two years where they have not been able to hold any charity event, something that normally also served to raise funds for the group,” concluded Gonzalez.
