Next Tuesday, 15th February, marks International Childhood Cancer Day. Coinciding with this date, the Ronald McDonald Foundation will set up an information table, in front of Las Lagunas CARE to raise awareness of the services provided by the group, and raise funds for their Malaga house, "which offers free accommodation to families with children hospitalised in the Materno Infantil", explained the Volunteerings’ Councillor, Mariló Olmedo (Cs) today.

As for the fundraising, the Ronald McDonald Foundation Volunteer, Ana Romero, said that "residents can collaborate with the association by purchasing some of our charitable products, including bracelets for just one euro, pens, calendars and mugs".

The Foundation's volunteers will be in Las Lagunas opposite CARE from 10 am until 2 pm this Tuesday. If you can not come but want to collaborate, you can also access the Ronald McDonald House online shop. (www.latiendaderonald.org), "where we also offer gifts for weddings, baptisms, communions and other events.

Due to the pandemic, the volunteer also said, the Malaga Ronald McDonald House has considerably reduced its income "as we have not been able to hold our traditional charity dinner, or many of our street markets, nor have we been able to set up stands at events, and this has had a considerable impact on the house".

  • Cancer affects almost 140 children out of every million, under 15, every year.

Supporting children affected by the disease

Cancer affects nearly 140 children every year, for every million children under 15. Fortunately, around 80 per cent of patients manage to recover from the disease with little or no after-effects. "Nobody is exempt from having a child, or a close relative, with this illness at some point. We may need to go to Malaga house as well as the other three available in our country, specifically in Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia," said the Volunteers’ Councillor, who also said that "the Ronald McDonald Foundation does exceptional work. Therefore, we should support both the administrations, each within their competence, as well as each one, individually. Finally, Olmedo stressed that "Mijas is always supportive and, together, we will ensure that this group continues to provide this much-needed service.
