Mijas beaches will become an Urban Art Museum in the coming months. The Council announced, on the 8th, this new initiative. ‘Mural Museums on the beaches’, in which walls facing the sea, will be painted to beautify the coastline and its accesses to turn it into another tourist attraction. These spaces will become canvases showing maritime and environmental details of the municipality. The aim of this project is for bathers and visitors to enjoy these Artworks, which at the same time will be highlighting local culture. According to the Beaches and Operational Services Councillor, José Carlos Martín (Cs), “we thought it would be a good idea to decorate and embellish these points with drawings related to the marine environment, the native fauna and the most characteristic elements of the town”. The Councillor also stated that “it is about trying to decorate those white walls that we have on the different beaches of our municipality”. Thus, with its means, Mijas will be a pioneer having, not an open-air museum but a museum on the beach.
These murals will be located in El Chaparral, El Faro and La Cala beaches. In addition, the Town Hall pointed out that the investment will be minimal since the material will be provided by Operational Services. As the Deputy Mayor said, “the first step to carry out this initiative will be, to select the designs, which will soon be presented and evaluated by the Town Hall. Once we have the sketches, we will enter a second phase, in which paintings will be painted on the murals”. He also expressed that “we are open to any kind of suggestion”. “The idea came up at a joint meeting of Beaches and Operational Services. They always paint these walls to keep them clean as part of the actions carried out to maintain the coastline. It was then, when we suggested that one of the municipal workers, who is also a local artist specialising in murals, should paint his artistic expressions, which are becoming more and more popular both inside and outside the city,” Martín pointed out.
How will they be?
These murals will show elements of the Mijas fauna such, as the plover. The Councillor added that, as Mijas is a birdwatching area, “the plovers are not the only ones to be seen on the Mijas coast. Easily, you can spot cetaceans from the beach. They will also be included in this project”. The marine flora will not be missing in these murals either, especially the one referring to the ZEC area (Special Conservation Area) of Calahonda, where under the sea “the Posidonia Oceanica meadows inhabited by a rich biodiversity and which allow the oxygenation of the water”. Also, Marine life details, traditions and other symbols of the town will be shown. To conclude, Martín said that “weather conditions and storms permitting, they could be finished by the summer”.
