Among the social items that Mijas Town Hall allocates to groups and NGOs, the one that stands out is the one received by the Spanish Cancer Association (AECC), which received 15,000 euros from the Mijas Town Hall last year. The money given went to cover the treatment cost for lymphedema patients entirely. Today, the Mijas Mayor, Josele González (PSOE), and the Social Services Councillor, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE), received the President of the group in Mijas-Fuengirola, Paula Casas, at the Town Hall. Both have highlighted the value of this grant and the importance of establishing new collaboration ways.

"We consider what programmes may be eligible for subsidies or what extra aid lines these groups may receive. They have seen their income reduced due to these two years of the pandemic that we have all suffered, as they have not been able to carry out the different charitable activities with which they used to raise funds for the different programmes and workshops they offer," said the Mayor. Casas said that "we have two physiotherapists and many patients with lymphoedema and we have to continue to maintain this structure, which is possible thanks to this grant from Mijas Town Hall". The NGO said that they are currently assisting around 400 families in Mijas. "In Mijas, we have 310 aid beneficiaries, and about 70 are part of the lymphedema programme, in addition to about 700 that we attend to in Fuengirola," said Casas.

For his part, Zapico stressed that "although its scope is not exclusively local, there are many Mijeños who need these services and with this aid granted from Social Services, contribute to the improvement that these people can have when they are diagnosed with the disease.

The AECC plans, among other initiatives, to give a volunteer course in March, but also "we want to do workshops on grief, memory, learn how to put on wigs, make-up," said Casas.

Finally, the Mayor asked the rest of the public institutions to get involved and collaborate with this cause: "Because this has to be a joint effort by everyone because cancer is a disease that is affecting more and more people".
