On the occasion of its celebration next Sunday 6th, the Department of Equality has launched the campaign 'Female genital mutilation is male violence'

According to a study carried out by the Government Delegation against gender violence, 3,652 girls under 14 years of age, are at risk of suffering female genital mutilation in Spain. On the occasion of the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation, which is celebrated next Sunday, February 6th, Mijas Town Hall wanted to join in with a campaign created by the Department of Equality under the slogan 'Female genital mutilation is male violence'.

"A female mutilation is a form of violence against women. It violates the rights of women and girls, affecting their physical and psychological integrity, as well as their sexual and reproductive health, perpetuating gender inequalities," says the Equality Councillor, Natalia Martínez (PSOE), who stresses that "it is paramount to continue promoting protocols, that allow early detection in the health, social and educational spheres".

In addition to the poster to raise public awareness, the Equality Department has scheduled an interview with the President of the Kirira Foundation, Estrella Giménez Buiza, for Monday, 7th January, at 11 am in Mijas Comunicación. Founded in 2007, this non-governmental development organisation's main objective is the eradication of female genital mutilation. Its work lines include education, infrastructures, female empowerment, shelters and humanitarian aid.

The International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation was designated on the 6th February, by the United Nations General Assembly to expand international efforts to abandon this practice, which is included in the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
