The text has been agreed upon between trade union sections, political parties and the departments of Equality and Human Resources

The Equality and Diversity Councillor, Natalia Martínez (PSOE) and the Human Resources Councillor, Laura Moreno (PSOE) announced this Tuesday, that Mijas Town Council has already approved its first Equality Plan for municipal workers in the Local Government Board. This document, which will be valid for 4 years, will guarantee equal treatment in terms of job positions, training, family reconciliation or inclusive communication, among other aspects.

As the Equality Councillor explained, all the trade union sections of the City Council, political parties and representatives of the Equality and Human Resources Departments have participated in the drafting of this document. "We have reached a consensus on six strategic lines on which we are going to work from now on. I have to say that some of them are already being implemented and we have done so naturally because, in the last year, we have made great strides in terms of equality," said Martínez.

The first strategic line is related to corporate social responsibility, or in other words, the political will have to make this plan effective in its four years of validity. The second line refers to access to employment and the selection of personnel, without gender distinction, "because there are still Departments that are highly masculinised and vice versa, and both men and women have the same right and the same capacity to access any job they fit," said the Equality Councillor.

The text also includes recommendations and measures to promote family reconciliation and co-responsibility, something that is already being applied in the Consistory, highlighted by the Human Resources Councillor, recalling the option of teleworking during the months of the pandemic. "In this sense, it is also important for public administrations to support single-parent families to reconcile their family and working life, and that is what a Town Hall committed to equality such as Mijas has to do," Moreno pointed out.

Likewise, the plan advocates that the staff should use inclusive communication, added the Human Resources Councillor, "and this aspect must be made visible because what is not said is not seen either".

The document also stresses the importance of the health of municipal workers and training inequality, "as it is essential that all public-facing staff have this knowledge in order to treat everyone equally, regardless of sex, gender or gender identity", argued the Councillor for Equality.
The municipal staff will receive a summary of this document for their information.

Dissemination of the document

In addition to the strategic lines, this municipal plan also includes protocols for action in cases of gender violence or sexual harassment in the City Council staff. Once approved by the Local Government Board, this document, of more than 200 pages, will be sent to the Ministry of Equality and, subsequently, will be published on the Council's website. A summary of the document will also be distributed to all workers for their information. All this said Moreno, "is to achieve real and effective equality, which is taking so much work, and sometimes we see that steps are being taken backwards, which is why all public administrations must get involved in this matter, as well as political parties, which are a loudspeaker for many people in the street".

Finally, Martínez encouraged private sector companies to also draw up this plan, "in fact, those with more than 50 workers are obliged to have this document in order to manage human resources in an egalitarian way, without any kind of discrimination".
