The Environment Department is carrying out a collaborative initiative for the creation of an urban forest in a green area of the municipality near Doma Street. "In the Mijas Environment Department we are committed to this approach, planting in populated areas and that these forests act as a CO2 sink, and also help to conserve the biodiversity of the area," said the Area Councillor, Arancha López (Cs).

On February 1st, it was the students of the intermediate cycle of Technician Guide in the Natural Environment and Leisure Time who joined this initiative by planting 40 cork oaks, which join the 320 that were planted at the end of last year. "We are very grateful for the collaboration of these students, for getting involved in the conservation of the natural Mijas environment and in the creation of urban forests," said López, who pointed out that this is an environmental awareness activity "and that when the years go by, they will realise the important environmental work they did on this day".

To make the activity more sustainable, the students travelled from school to this area by bike. "We are delighted to take part in this initiative, given that in the training cycle we work a lot on caring for the environment and, for this reason, I think it is very interesting to be here today", said Las Lagunas high school teacher, Mari Paz Vega.

In order to allow the trees to grow in this area, the plot was previously prepared by the Environment Department. "We have hardly modified it, we have cleared some terraces to be able to plant the trees comfortably, but we have not touched any of the bushes," said the Environment technician Juan Luis Vega, who justified the suitability of planting cork oaks in the area because "it is one of the most resistant species to both climate and fire". Finally, the Environment Department invites other groups to join this initiative.
