According to a report by the Malaga College of Architects in 2021, 553 building projects were approved in Mijas. They involve some 1,200 homes, which places the municipality third in the province, behind the capital, with almost 1,700 approvals and Fuengirola with 810. Of these 553 projects, in our municipality, the Mijas Town Hall Town Planning Councillor, Andrés Ruiz (Cs), reports that almost 400 have already been built, and the construction of single-family housing is prevailing over multi-family housing.
For the Councillor, "the most important thing about this data is not that we are in third place, but that our growth is sustained. Perhaps, Fuengirola is more of a peak because of the area that is now being developed in El Higuerón. However, we have been growing gradually, in a sustained way, and less speculative over the last five years, and we have put ourselves above municipalities such as Estepona or Marbella ''.
The province recorded a total of 5,820 projected units, 15.5 per cent more than the previous year when 5,039 visas were registered. In terms of the number of homes completed, Malaga capital accounted for 2,006 properties, followed by Estepona with 1,237, Fuengirola with 687, Marbella with 681 and Mijas with 634. These figures confirm the upward trend in the construction sector, in the last financial year, after the slowdown caused by the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic. "It is also true, and I must stress, that we have a local micro-economy in terms of building permits of lesser importance. It gives us other positive data as our local economy also provides opportunities for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs," stresses the Councillor.
According to statistics, from the Architects' Association, from January to December 2021, 903 projects were processed with a budget of more than 740 million euros, making last year the best year in the last five years.
Nevertheless, looking to the future, the need for subsidised housing is reflected and "we are working to balance the market and give opportunities to people who have fewer economic resources. In this sense, we are going to work in this line in 2022 because we foresee that this growth will increase with sustainable urban planning, taking care of our space, our land," adds the Councillor.
Mijas stands out for its infrastructures and communication, and for this reason, it is the focus not only of investors but also of many people who want to live in our town, said Ruiz.
