300 families benefited, last year, from this programme belonging to the Social Services area

Malaga is the fifth province in Spain, where the price of rent has risen the most. Thus, according to the real estate portal Fotocasa, Mijas, Marbella, Benalmádena and Estepona are the municipalities in Malaga where the rental value increased the most in the last year. To facilitate citizens' access to housing, Mijas has a rental aid programme managed by the Social Services area, which in 2021 helped 300 families in the town with 478,000 euros. This was explained, this morning, by the Councillor of the Department, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE), who added that "these are direct aids that have been paid to the residents of Mijas, these families have received an average of about 1,600 euros a year. Thanks to this programme they can alleviate part of the high cost of rent, so they can allocate part of the money from their monthly income to the daily chores to avoid situations of social vulnerability in the municipality".

Zapico took stock of this programme in recent years: "Since the socialist Josele González has been Mayor of Mijas, the programme has gone from 15,600 euros in rental aid in 2018 to 376,000 euros in 2019, and from 475,000 euros in 2020 to 478,000 last year", he said.

Housing Aid in Andalusia

On the other hand, the Social Services Department has also wanted to participate in the rental aid programme of the Junta de Andalusia: "We have allocated sufficient human resources (2 people) to cover the applications; 240 aids have been managed, of which only 102 met the requirements set by the Junta. Unfortunately, 13 months after the deadline, only 30 payments have been made as of 24th January'', said the Councillor.

Aid applications

As for the processing of aid, the Councillor explained that there is an ordinance that is posted on the website of the City Council with a form that can be downloaded, which must be filled in. There are also some requirements to be able to apply for this aid: "minimum rent, rental price, income, number of members of the family unit, if there are disabled people in the family unit, etc." Zapico pointed out. Although aid can be presented at any time, the area advises waiting until more receipts have been paid, "as they must be justified before receiving it, because when you present a full year, you receive the aid for that full year. The administrative work is the same, whether it is for one month, two or twelve", concluded the Councillor.
