Mijas generated more than 39,700 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) in 2021, 7% more than in 2020 when 37,032 tonnes were collected. The rate of waste generated per inhabitant per day was 1.26 kilos, compared to 1.18 kilos in 2020 and the month with the highest collection rate was August, with 4,225 tonnes, compared to 3,853 tonnes in the same month in 2020, which is 10% more. It was detailed, on Monday, by the Cleaning Councillor of Mijas Town Hall, Laura Moreno (PSOE), that "we must take into account that during this past August, there has been an upturn in tourism at all levels, and an increase in waste generated by restaurants, bars and hotels".
The first quarter began with a decrease in the volume of MSW compared to the previous year, but from April onwards, all the months recorded increases compared to 2020. It was in May when the increase was most pronounced, with a 15% increase compared to the same month in 2020.
Collection of light packaging
About the collection of light packaging, the figures show a slight increase of 1% compared to 2020. Thus, in 2021, 2,097,359 kilos arrived at the Costa del Sol Environmental Complex from Mijas, compared to 2,070,467 the previous year. "This means that Mijas is a municipality that recycles, and every time, it recycles much better, with the packaging being the most recycled waste," said Moreno.
The month with the highest rate was August, with 244,134 kilos of packaging collected, almost the same amount as the same month last year. But, it was in October, when the increase was most noticeable, reaching 32%.
Paper and cardboard, in the blue container
The blue container, for paper and cardboard, received more than 1,557,464 kilos in 2021. 15% more than in 2020, when it reached 1,351,996 kilos. The first quarter began with a drop in the collection volume, but April saw the highest increase, up to 57% more than the previous year. The months with the highest paper collection volumes were July (155,858 kilos) and October (151,430 kilos).
The green igloo
Concerning the green igloo, in which glass containers are deposited, a total of 2,260,997 kg were collected in 2021. This data indicates an increase of 11% compared to the previous year when 2,028,350 kg were collected. The glass collection figures started negative compared to 2020 until May when the percentages started to rise and remained so until the end of the year. August, with 282,593 kilos, was the month with the highest volume of glass generation. "In this case, we have to say that we were awarded the 'Green Igloo', which indicates that we are recycling a lot, and well," said the Councillor.
Mijas, cleaner
Moreno stressed that Mijas citizens are increasingly aware of the importance of recycling and that the City Council will continue to implement various campaigns such as 'Mijas, cleaner', which reaches the street and sneaks into schools through fun science. "From this point, I would like to call on all Mijas residents, to continue to make responsible use of the containers, and throw each one, in its place: glass in the green container, packaging in the yellow one, and paper and cardboard in the blue one. This way, Mijas will be a cleaner town, and also we can have a greener planet," concluded the Councillor.
