Mijas is positioned as the preferred destination for tourists in 2022, according to Aehcos

  • Malaga receives 5.5 million tourists in 2021, 46% more than the previous year
  • For the tourism sector for the year 2022, once again, shed light on the preference of tourists when choosing Mijas as a destination.

According to the Ministry of Tourism of the Andalusian Regional Government, overnight stays in the province grew by 96% to over 10.5 million

Forecasts, for the tourism sector for the year 2022, once again, shed light on the preference of tourists when choosing Mijas as a destination. According to the vice president of the Association of Hotel Businessmen of the Costa del Sol (Aehcos) in Mijas, Juan Miguel Marcos, "the second half of 2021 has been very similar to the data recorded during the second half of 2019, something that makes us think that there is a preference to travel to the town, and we believe that the results for this year will be positive".

As for the effect of the omicron variant, and due to the restrictions imposed, "there are many tourists who had booked but they have cancelled their reservations, eventually. These first January fortnight, have not been as good as we would like", Marcos clarified, "but we are convinced that the evolution of the pandemic will allow us to have a good few months during the high season".

These figures mean that our town is the fixed destination for tourists, of which many already know its charms, and that at the International Tourism Fair of Madrid 2022, they will make them known to a wider public. The Mayor of the city, Josele González (PSOE), together with the Councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs), and the Councillor for Sports, Andrés Ruiz (Cs), are already in Madrid to promote the city as a favourite tourist destination. This year, the offer presented by our city, aims to promote luxury tourism under the opening of the hotel La Zambra, the former Byblos hotel, which will open its doors at the end of June.

Another of the strong points of the promotional campaign will be the brand 'Mijas, Sunl & Golf', which unifies the 14 golf courses in the municipality under the same heading and its different services. Likewise, the fair will also emphasise the traditions of our municipality, without forgetting other sectors, such as sun and beach tourism, handicrafts or gastronomy. For example, the unique character of Easter Week in Mijas will be highlighted.

In Mijas, "we have an enjoyably mild climate, we have wonderful golf courses and we have many accommodation options to offer tourists. In order not to remain only in seasonal tourism in the summer months, and to attract tourists also in winter, we have to break this seasonality that is damaging the tourism sector on the Costa del Sol," said the vice-president of the association.

Thus, Andalusia is positioned, according to the Junta, as a national leader and international benchmark in the sector: forecasts suggest that this year could reach 26 million visitors, which would mean recovering the 80% of tourists who arrived in 2019, and place the community in 2021, in the same figures as before the pandemic.

Data in Málaga

According to the Ministry of Tourism of the Andalusian Regional Government, the province of Malaga registered a total of 5.5 million tourists last year, 46% more than the previous year. Of these, more than 3,300,000 travellers stayed in hotel establishments, generating more than 10.5 million overnight stays, growing by 78% and 96%, respectively, compared to the previous year. And, although all Andalusian provinces have presented positive variation rates compared to the previous year, Malaga is the one that has grown the most in overnight stays, occupying first place in the region, both in volume and increase, doubling the number of hotel nights spent in the previous year.

For its part, Malaga airport recorded the arrival of more than 4,400,000 passengers, 78% more than in 2020, marked by mobility restrictions due to the pandemic. In 2021, limitations were also maintained, which means that air traffic is still far from that recorded before the health crisis. Thus, the increase in tourism was also reflected in employment, so in the province, there has been a 21% growth in the volume of Social Security affiliates in the hospitality sector. Andalusia is the autonomous community that contributes most to the increase in jobs in the hotel and catering industry in Spain, and the one that has registered the highest rate of growth in Social Security affiliates in this sector.
