In the last two years, more than 1,400 residents have participated in this training and employment programme

This Tuesday, we travelled to Rancho de la Luz, where a group of workers, in charge of clearing and maintenance of roads, is about to finish their six-month work contract as part of the Basic Income 2021 project. In the coming weeks, the first workers of the 2022 programme will be incorporated. Arancha López (Cs), CEO of Mijas Complementary Services, assures that "in total there are 434 people on this list and soon, we will begin to contact them so that they can start to join this programme".

These workers add Laura Moreno (PSOE), also CEO of Mijas Complementary Services, "will be progressively incorporated into this training and employment programme until spring-summer, which will be the strongest period of work by Renta Básica. In future editions, we will publish when a new call for applications is open so that all those unemployed people in our municipality can access this programme and could find an alternative job and a reinsertion or job placement they were looking for".

The ultimate goal of this programme is the incorporation of its participants into the labour market. "The data show that almost 40% of the participants in this programme get a job after going through Basic Income, and this is thanks to the training they receive and the work they do during the six-month contract", López points out.

The Renta Básica programme studies the profile of each participant individually to adapt their training and the jobs to be carried out. "We always try to look at each of the profiles individually, so that they can be adapted to the municipal needs, as always, but also to each of the Basic Income users".

More than 1,400 contracts in the last two years
In the last two years, more than 1,400 residents have participated in Renta Básica. The City Council hopes that the good job prospects in 2022, after the pandemic, will reduce the number of contracts in this programme. "We have been in continuous collaboration with municipal Social Services so that all those who need this economic support in their homes have this alternative. For this reason, more than 1,400 people were hired through this programme. We believe that this year the level of hiring is going to drop since there is also more work on the streets, especially in the spring-summer season. Therefore, we hope that the number of unemployed people in Mijas will be less and, there will also be fewer people who need this programme to keep going", concluded Moreno, who assures that "both 2020 and 2021 have been two very complicated years of management, both at an administrative and operational level".

The Basic Income programme will continue this year to offer unemployed residents 6-month contracts of 8 or 5 hours. According to López, "from the Town Hall and through this programme, we will continue to help all the residents of Mijas who are in a situation of long-term unemployment or at risk of social exclusion; they will continue to have the support they need from the local administration to join the world of work".
