It will be compulsory to dilute pet urine on public roadway in 2022

  • The new measure will be submitted for approval at the next plenary session in December, and will come into force in the first quarter of the year
  • This measure will help pet owners to behave more civically.

The Mayor of Mijas, Josele González, explains that it is a measure that does not have a collection purpose but to raise awareness

The government team will present new modifications to the Ordinance of Security and Civic Coexistence at the next plenary session, including the obligation to dilute pet urine with water when urinating on the public roadway. "In recent years, we have made a great effort, not only from the point of view of personnel, but from the economic point of view to keep our streets and public furniture clean," said the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), who explained that "the urine of our pets cause irreparable damage to traffic signs, benches, lampposts, and other elements of public roads that can be avoided with a very simple gesture by their owners.

In this sense, the Councillor for Public Roads, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE), pointed out that "we are going to try to ensure that this measure helps the owners of these pets to behave as civically as possible and that we can reverse this situation".

The Mayor pointed out that this is not a measure with a collection purpose, and recalled that other municipalities in Málaga such as Ronda, Benalmádena and Torremolinos have also implemented it. "This is not a campaign to sanction, but to have a more orderly and cleaner municipality, we have to have regulations and ordinances that allow us to ensure that compliance with the rules is for everyone".

Information campaign

The government team will carry out information and awareness campaigns, something that has already been done on several occasions in recent years.  "The entry into force of this modification in the ordinance will be accompanied by information campaigns, through the municipal media and others that we deem appropriate to reach the largest number of citizens of the municipality," said Cruz.

They have also reported that the amount of the penalties for this reason range between 50 and 750 euros, depending on the severity. "Hopefully, these sanctions will not have to reach any of our neighbours, which will mean that we will have cleaner streets and that those 27,000 pets registered in our municipality do not leave any type of waste on our streets, which only generate bad image and insecurity, as well as an expense and deterioration of our public furniture," said the Mayor.

It is now compulsory to pick up pet excrement from the streets.  Finally, the government team has pointed out that the Mijas Town Hall has been committed in recent years to the creation of dog parks in the municipality and that for the implementation of this new measure "we have taken into consideration everything that has been transferred to us by neighbourhood groups and even the animal associations themselves".
