Once again this year, the Department of Food Markets and Markets is launching a campaign to encourage local shopping in our town. Now that the Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year’s Eve meals are approaching, the Department is inviting people to go to local shops. “What we intend with these campaigns is to promote local commerce. Our traders, who always advise us with a smile, both in the market and in the street market, will gladly help us to find fresh and quality products, and at the same time, we will be collaborating in the revitalisation of local trade,” said the Councillor responsible for these Departments, Veronica Ensberg (PSOE), who invited everyone “this Christmas to come to the Municipal Market and the street markets”.
A few weeks ago, the promotional video of the market was launched and on Wednesday 22nd, reusable, environmentally friendly bags were handed out, which have been distributed during these days while stocks last. “We wanted to give away some cloth bags for our traders to hand out to their customers, they are sustainable bags, which can be reused, washed easily, and be used for numerous purposes,” added Ensberg. And, in addition, if they still have any pending detail in the market, they can find “the gift they need and have that close treatment that is always highly valued by the customer,” he concluded.
New measures for street markets and the market
The Town Hall assures that it will continue to work to enhance the value of these spaces with new initiatives and measures, such as the abolition of the street market tax this year to alleviate the consequences of the pandemic and, in addition, by placing fixings ,in Las Lagunas and La Cala markets, to hold the stalls in windy days. Likewise, the municipal government points out, “the Street Trading Ordinance has been approved, which will allow, among other things, the application for aid from entities such as the Junta de Andalucía to promote the sector”. The Mercado de Abastos has also taken important steps in the last year, with the approval of its ordinance, a text which for the first time creates a regulatory framework establishing opening hours, social distancing limits and the rights and obligations of both vendors and consumers themselves.
Commerce relaunches the campaign buy local at Christmas
As it did this time last year, the Mijas Town Council’s Department of Commerce is launching the campaign ‘At Christmas, buy local’ to encourage residents to shop at local businesses, which offer interesting discounts at this time of year. “This local commerce that brings more confidence, with that personalised treatment. Especially in these times when the most affected sector is the commercial sector, it is important that we can help and do our Christmas shopping in our nearest shops,” said the Councillor of Commerce, Natalia Martinez (PSOE).
The Councillor invited residents to support the local economy and job creation this way and to contribute “so that these businesses do not have to come out of business, especially in these hard times of pandemic”. “With this initiative, we show that we are on the side of traders and entrepreneurs” said Martínez. In this sense, the Councillor recalled that this year, the campaign ‘At Christmas, buy local’ is diversified by encouraging both traditional shopping and online shopping through the Mijas Marketplace platform, which the Town Hall launched two months ago. “It is being very well received with 165 businesses registered. We want to go for more, as the more businesses there are, the more visits the site will get, so I encourage all traders to sign up so they can digitise their shop window, display their product catalogue and sell online.
